TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (38-38, 2-4) finish their three-game series this afternoon against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (42-32, 4-1). After dropping the first two games of the series, the Ducks will look to salvage the final game behind ace pitcher John Brownell. This marks the final game for both teams before the 2017 Atlantic League All-Star Game.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks fell to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-2 on Saturday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in the middle game of a three-game series.

The Blue Crabs got on the board first, plating two runs against Ducks starter Rafael Perez in the bottom of the first. Jose Lozada doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch, and Michael Snyder was plated by a Cory Vaughn single to hand Southern Maryland a 2-0 lead.

Long Island retaliated in the top of the third when Delta Cleary Jr. beat out an infield single and stole second base against Drew Hayes (4-3). He advanced to third on a Lew Ford groundout and scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the bottom of the third, Snyder connected on a two-run home run off Perez (5-5) to put the Blue Crabs up 4-1. Perez threw five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out a season-high eight while walking three.

Southern Maryland rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh against Long Island reliever Stephen De La Cruz to expand the gap to 7-1.

Anthony Vega tripled against Zack Thornton in the top of the eighth and scored on a Cleary Jr. sacrifice fly, but the Ducks went quietly in the ninth to fall 7-2.

Ruben Gotay and Lew Ford led the Ducks with two hits each.

ON THE MOUND: John Brownell gets the call for the Ducks in Sunday’s matinee. In 14 starts this year, the righty is 6-1 with a 2.89 ERA, and has struck out 50 and walked 26 in 87.1 innings. In his last outing on July 4, Brownell twirled his third straight quality start and got the win over the Lancaster Barnstormers. He threw a season-high 117 pitches, and allowed three runs on five hits in six innings of work. “Brownie” has made two starts against Southern Maryland this year, and is 1-0 with a 2.46 ERA.

He will be opposed by right-hander Brian Grening of the Blue Crabs. Grening is 7-2 with a 2.71 ERA in 14 starts with the Blue Crabs this season, and has struck out 58 and walked only 12 in 98.0 innings pitched. In his last start, the righty threw a complete game three-hitter against the Sugar Land Skeeters on July 3, giving up just one run and not walking a batter. Grening has started twice against the Ducks this season, and is 1-0, and has allowed just 3 runs in 13.0 innings.
