Game 126: Ducks vs. Bees

OF/1B Marc Krauss and the Long Island Ducks look to get back on the winning track tonight against the New Britain Bees.

6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

The Long Island Ducks (32-23; 68-57) continue their four-game, wrap-around weekend series with the New Britain Bees (22-31; 48-75). This will be the final series between the two teams this year. The Bees have a 9-8 advantage in the first 17 games of the season series with the Ducks, and a 4-3 lead at Bethpage Ballpark. This is the final series of the 2017 regular season between Long Island and New Britain.

The Long Island Ducks met the Chapey’s Home Run Challenge on Friday night in the opener of a four-game series against the New Britain Bees. Angelo Songco’s two-run blast to right field in the sixth inning was Long Island’s 100th home run of the 2017 season.

Because they hit 100 home runs this year and met the challenge, Chapey & Sons Funeral Homes will donate $5,000 to the QuackerJack Foundation. This marks the first time the Ducks have met Chapey’s Home Run Challenge since they hit 102 longballs as a team during the 2014 season. It came on Songco’s 21st home run of the season, the most among Ducks batters this year and tied for the third-most in the Atlantic League.

The Bees used the longball to fuel their offense during the game, as they hit five home runs to pick up the win. Craig Maddox led the way with three homers, including a pair of grand slams. He finished the game with four hits, 11 RBI and four runs to lead the Bees.

Kyle Simon (10-11) started and got the win for New Britain, pitching six innings of two-run ball, allowing nine hits and three walks while striking out four. Tyler Levine (3-2) started and took the loss for the Ducks, yielding 11 runs on 11 hits and two walks over four innings with three strikeouts.

Jordan Hinshaw, Delta Cleary Jr. and Elmer Reyes each had a pair of hits to lead the Flock offensively. Reliever Jose Velez dazzled on the mound for Long Island with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out five of the six hitters he faced.

Matt Larkins takes the mound for the Ducks tonight. In 24 appearances (23 starts), Larkins is 8-6 with a 3.69 ERA and leads the staff with 139.0 innings pitched and 119 strikeouts. The right-hander got the win in his last start on August 28 against York, allowing three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings, falling one out shy of a quality start. He struck out six and walked a season-high five in the outing. The last time Larkins faced the Bees, he borrowed a page from the book of Jack Morris by pitching to the score. In a 13-6 Long Island win, Larkins allowed six runs in six innings on 13 hits, a season-high for a Ducks pitcher in a single game.

The Bees answer back with right-hander Jonathan Pettibone, looking to recover from a turbulent outing against the Ducks in his last start. On August 27, the righty allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 4.1 innings, however the Bees still won 8-7. Overall, the former Philadelphia Phillies hurler is 2-6 with a 4.77 ERA in 20 games, striking out 57 and walking 30 in 90.2 innings. Pettibone is working his way back from a myraid of shoulder issues that cost him the past two seasons.
