Rob Rogers and the Ducks bullpen turned in another great performance on Thursday

GAME TIME/LOCATION:

7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, N.J.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP:

With a brilliant 4-1 win last night, the Long Island Ducks enter the pivot game of the best-of-five Liberty Division Championship Series even with the Somerset Patriots 1-1. The regular season series between Long Island and Somerset was remarkably competitive, with the Ducks claiming 11 victories and the Patriots nine. This marks the third straight year that the two rivals have met in the opening round of the playoffs, with each team having won one playoff series.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP:

The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-1 on Thursday night in Game Two of the Liberty Division Championship Series at Bethpage Ballpark. The best-of-five series is now tied at one game apiece.

Long Island took an early 1-0 lead on Lew Ford’s first-inning RBI single through the left side, which scored Giovanny Alfonzo when left fielder Aharon Eggleston’s throw to the plate sailed wild.

In the bottom of the fourth, a wild pitch scored Alex Burg and a two-out RBI single to left field by Elmer Reyes off Patriots starter Mike Antonini pushed the Ducks lead to 3-0.

Somerset closed to within two in the fifth on a two-out RBI single to center by Kyle Roller off Ducks starter Matt Larkins. David Vidal then hit a grounder up the middle with the tying runs on, but Dan Lyons made a diving stop and got the force out at second base to end the inning.

The Patriots threatened again in the sixth, collecting a single and two walks with two outs to force Larkins from the game. However, Rob Rogers came in and got Alfredo Rodriguez to fly out to right, ending the threat. Burg followed with a leadoff solo homer to right field in the bottom of the sixth off Patriots reliever Lucas Irvine to put the game out of reach.

Though Larkins (1-0) didn’t have his best “stuff” on Thursday, he willed his way through a gutsy 5.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and seven walks while striking out four. After struggling some in the playoffs with Long Island in 2016, the right-hander’s performance in Game Two was exactly what the team needed to gain momentum in the series as it heads to Somerset.

Antonini (0-1) took the loss, yielding three runs on seven hits and a walk in four innings with four strikeouts. Amalio Diaz earned his first save of the postseason with a scoreless ninth inning.

Burg finished 3-4 with a home run, RBI and two runs scored. Five Ducks relievers combined to give up just two hits in 3.1 scoreless innings while striking out three.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:

ON THE MOUND:

Southpaw Jake Fisher takes the bump for the Ducks in the all-important third game of this best-of-five series. After being acquired in a September trade with the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League, Fisher made two starts with Long Island, collecting no record and a 2.26 ERA (4 ER/13.0 IP). In his last start on September 14 at Lancaster Fisher stymied the Barnstormers bats, allowing just one run on four hits in seven splendid innings of work. This will be first playoff appearance for the lefty and his first start against the Patriots.

Somerset responds with right-hander Will Oliver. Oliver has been a thorn in the Ducks playoff side before, as in 2015 he threw a compete-game, three-hit shutout in Game Four of the Liberty Division Championship Series with the Patriots facing elimination. However, this is 2017, where the righty was 8-6 with a 4.78 ERA in 23 games (17 starts) during the regular season. In his last start on September 13 against the New Britain Bees, Oliver allowed three runs on four hits in six innings, getting the win in a 7-5 Somerset triumph. The Ducks also beat Oliver in Game Five of last year’s Liberty Division Championship Series at Bethpage Ballpark, tagging him for five runs (two earned) in seven innings.
