Game 117: Ducks vs. Skeeters

INF Dan Lyons has three straight two-hit games for the Long Island Ducks, who look to wrap up a series win against the Sugar Land Skeeters tonight.

6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

The Long Island Ducks (28-18; 64-52) wrap up their four-game series with the Sugar Land Skeeters (21-23; 51-63) on Thursday night. The Ducks look for the series victory over the Skeeters and have won 17 of their last 20 games, and have a six-game lead in the Liberty Division Second Half Standings over the Bridgeport Bluefish. The Skeeters enter tonight’s contest in third place in the Freedom Division, five games behind the first place York Revolution. Tonight marks the 17th matchup of the season between the two clubs, with the series even at 8-8. This series marks the final trip of the  2017 regular season for the Skeeters.

The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 6-3 on Wednesday night in the third game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Long Island took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jordan Hinshaw singled off Skeeters starter Sean Gleason and scored on a double play ball following a walk and a single. The Ducks doubled the lead in the third when Hinshaw singled and scored from first on Delta Cleary Jr.’s single along with a fielding error.

Sugar Land tied the game at two in the fifth on a two-run home run to center field by Bryan Pounds off Ducks starter Jake Dunning. A four-run seventh then gave the Skeeters a 6-2 advantage. RBI singles by Joe Benson and Josh Prince, along with a sacrifice fly by Caleb Ramsey and a run-scoring wild pitch, did the damage.

The Ducks attempted a comeback in the ninth, as Dan Lyons’ RBI single closed the gap to 6-3. However, Long Island was unable to pull even.

Gleason (4-7) picked up the win, tossing six innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out five. Dunning (2-1) suffered the loss, yielding six runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk over six innings with four strikeouts.

Hinshaw and Lyons led the Flock with two hits apiece. Zac Treece pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings for the Ducks, striking out four.

Alfredo Simon takes the bump for the Ducks in the series finale, looking to wrap up another series win for Long Island. In 11 games (eight starts) this season, Simon is 2-3 with a 4.75 ERA, but has pitched better than those results indicate. In 47.1 innings, Simon has allowed only 48 hits while striking out 43 and walking only 12. In his last five appearances, Simon has combined to issue just two free passes in 23.1 innings, while striking out 25. The right-hander has faced the Skeeters twice this season, and is 1-1 with a 12.60 ERA (7 ER/5 IP), which represents one bad outing (7 ER on June 26) and one good outing (0 R in 3.0 IP on July 25).

Former Long Island Duck Mitch Talbot climbs the hill for the Skeeters, who seek a series split with the Ducks. The ex-big leaguer is 6-3  with a 3.81 ERA on the season in 16 games (14 starts). In his last start on August 19 against York, Talbot allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings, striking out nine and walking one. The right-hander has faced the Ducks once this season, allowing three runs on three hits in five innings, getting the win on June 26 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land.
