Game 87: Ducks vs. Skeeters
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (7-9, 43-43) return home to face the Sugar Land Skeeters (7-9, 37-49) to begin a quick, three-game homestand. The Ducks enter in a tie for third place in the Liberty Division Second Half standings with the New Britain Bees, and just 2.5 games behind the Bridgeport Bluefish. The Skeeters are also 2.5 games away from their division leader, currently sitting in fourth place behind the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Freedom Division.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 7-2 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The Barnstormers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Nate Coronado and an RBI single by Steve Clevenger off Ducks starter John Brownell. Long Island closed to within 2-1 in the fifth inning when Marc Krauss unloaded a solo home run to right-center field off Barnstormers starter Brad Bergesen.
Lancaster responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead to four. An RBI single by Rico Noel and a two-out, two-run homer to right by Cole Garner did the damage.
Two more runs in the sixth on Clevenger’s RBI single and Sean Halton’s sacrifice fly made it a 7-1 ballgame. Angelo Songco rounded out the scoring with a mammoth solo blast to right-center field in the ninth inning.
Bergesen (6-6) earned the win, tossing six innings of one-run ball, allowing two hits while striking out three. Brownell (7-2) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits and three walks in four and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts. Zac Treece and Patrick Crider each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Ducks.
Krauss led the Flock with three hits in the game, finishing a triple shy of the cycle.
ON THE MOUND: Henderson Alvarez climbs the hill for Long Island in the series opener, making his second start of the season. In his Ducks debut on July 18 against the Bees, the right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in two innings of work, walking three and not recording a strikeout. The five-year MLB veteran is known for his good command and heavy sinker, posting a superb career walk percentage of 5.5% (league average ~7.7%) and a stellar groundball rate of 55.0% (league average ~44%). Alvarez made 11 starts across three levels of the Oakland organization in 2016 and was a National League All-Star in 2014 while with the Miami Marlins.
Sugar Land calls upon righty Brett Marshall to start the series opener, making his 18th start of the season and 19th overall appearance. The former New York Yankee is 6-5 with a 4.33 ERA on the season for the Skeeters, and has allowed 97 hits and walked an eye-popping 52 batters while striking out just 62 in 99.2 innings. He has made one previous outing against the Ducks, allowing just one run on three hits in six innings on June 25 at Constellation Field. Last time out, he allowed three runs (none earned) in six innings against Lancaster, walking four and striking out two while getting the loss.
