Game 81: Ducks vs. Bees

DE6I0525GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (40-40, 4-6) take on the New Britain Bees (31-48, 5-4) to open up a three-game series Monday night at Bethpage Ballpark. This marks the first of 10 second-half games between Long Island and New Britain, and the first trip to the Island for the Bees since April 28-30.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 3-2 on Sunday night in the finale of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Somerset took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second inning off Ducks starter Dennis O’Grady. A wild pitch that plated Alfredo Rodriguez and a solo home run to right-center field off the bat of Carlos Guzman did the damage. The Patriots added an insurance run in the eighth inning on back-to-back doubles by Christian Marrero and pinch-hitter Adam Donachie.

Long Island put together a ninth inning rally against Patriots reliever Ronnie Shaban. RBI doubles from Marc Krauss and Ruben Gotay trimmed the deficit to 3-2. However, the Ducks were unable to plate the tying run.

Somerset starter Lucas Irvine (6-2) earned the win with six shutout innings, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out five. O’Grady (4-6) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings with two strikeouts. Ronnie Shaban collected his sixth save of the year despite allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in the ninth.

ON THE MOUND: Tyler Levine gets the start for the Ducks in the series opener this evening. In 15 appearances (one start), the right-hander is 2-0 with a 3.19 ERA. Used mostly in mop-up duty, Levine is working on a streak of 4.1 consecutive scoreless innings, and since the beginning of June sports a 1.00 ERA (1 ER/9 IP). The East Meadow, N.Y. native last pitched on July 8, throwing a 1-2-3 inning of relief at Southern Maryland. In his one start this year on May 3 at York, Levine got the win throwing seven innings and allowing two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out a season-high five.

The Bees send southpaw Greg Nappo to the mound to oppose Levine, making his fourth appearance and second start with the team. The lefty has no record and a 6.00 ERA with New Britain, having allowed six hits, walking one and striking out one in six innings. Before joining the Bees, Nappo was pitching in the Miami Marlins organization, where he split time this year with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (AA, Southern League) and the New Orleans Baby Cakes (AAA, Pacific Coast League).
