Game 80: Ducks vs. Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 5:05 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (40-39, 4-5) take on the Somerset Patriots (45-33, 3-5) in the rubber game of a three-game series. The Ducks currently sit in third place on the Liberty Division standings, only two games behind the Bridgeport Bluefish for first place in the second half standings, while the Patriots sit in fourth, 2.5 games back.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 7-4 on Saturday night in the middle game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.
Long Island opened the scoring with a three-run second inning against Patriots starter Will Oliver. A two-run double by Jordan Pacheco and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dan Lyons highlighted the inning. Scott Kelly hit an inside-the-park solo homer in the third inning off Ducks starter Rafael Perez, but an RBI single in the bottom of the frame by Ruben Gotay made it a 4-1 game.
Somerset grabbed another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Carlos Guzman, but the Ducks responded once again with an RBI double off the bat of Quintin Berry in the bottom of the inning to get their three-run advantage back. In the sixth, Lyons drove an opposite-field two-run homer to increase Long Island’s advantage to 7-2.
The Patriots tried to rally back in the eighth inning, plating a pair of runs on an RBI infield single from Kelly and a bases loaded walk to Alfredo Rodriguez. However, Lew Ford ran down a fly ball to left from Christian Marrero to strand the tying runs on base.
Perez (6-5) earned the win, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight. Oliver (3-2) suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings with six strikeouts. David Aardsma collected his eighth save of the season with one and one-third scoreless innings of relief.
Pacheco led the Flock with three hits, while Lyons added two. Lyons drove in three runs and scored twice, while Pacheco picked up two RBI and a run.
ON THE MOUND: Dennis O’Grady heads to the mound in the rubber game for the Ducks, making his 17th appearance and 13th start of the season. O’Grady is 4-5 with a 5.17 ERA in 73 innings this year, and has allowed 74 hits while recording 59 strikeouts and 39 walks. In his last outing on July 7 at Southern Maryland, the righty allowed four runs on six hits in 5.1 innings, and got no decision in a 5-4 Blue Crabs victory. Over his last three starts, O’Grady has a less-than-stellar 4:8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 18 innings.
The Patriots send Lucas Irvine to the bump in Sunday’s contest, making his 15th start of the season. Irvine is 5-2 with a 4.26 ERA on the campaign, and has allowed a staggering 83 hits in 76 innings, while striking out 50 and walking 28. The 6-1 right-hander was marvelous in his last start on July 9 against Sugar Land, allowing a run on seven hits in 7.2 innings in a 2-1 Patriots win. Irvine is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA (3 ER/9.0 IP) in his two starts against the Ducks this season.
