Game 79: Ducks vs. Patriots

Anthony Vega (2)GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (39-39, 3-5) take on the Somerset Patriots (45-32, 3-4) to continue a three-game series on Saturday night. The Ducks currently sit in fourth place on the Liberty Division standings, only two games behind the Bridgeport Bluefish for first place in the second half standings, while the Patriots sit in third, 1.5 games back.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 3-2 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Dan Lyons put the Ducks in front with a leadoff solo home run to left field in the third inning off of Patriots starter Efrain Nieves. It remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth when Somerset took a 2-1 lead. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Yovan Gonzalez tied the game, and a two-out solo homer to right by Kyle Roller of Ducks starter Matt Larkins gave the Patriots the lead.

The Ducks pulled back even in the seventh on Angelo Songco’s RBI single to right that scored Delta Cleary Jr. However, two walks followed by an RBI single to center from Mark Minicozzi put the Patriots back in front, 3-2. Long Island put the tying run on second in the ninth, but a running catch in left-center by Aharon Eggleston ended the ballgame.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Larkins pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Nieves lasted four innings, yielding a run on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Justin Wright (3-1) picked up the win despite allowing a run on two hits and a walk in the seventh inning. Amalio Diaz (2-2) took the loss, giving up a run on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning. Ronnie Shaban collected his fifth save with a scoreless ninth.

Cleary Jr. led the Flock with two hits on the night. Lyons and Marc Krauss each picked up a hit and two walks.

ON THE MOUND: Rafael Perez climbs the hill for the Ducks this evening, looking to turn around a recent downturn in his production. In his last three starts, Perez is 0-3 with a 6.46 ERA (11 ER/ 15.1 IP), 23 H, 15 K, 5 BB. However, the southpaw has also struggled from a spectacularly dreadful amount of run support, as the Long Island offense has managed just two runs in those three contests. Overall, the Major League veteran is 5-5 with a 4.04 ERA in 14 starts this year, and has allowed 83 hits, struck out 57 and walked 16 in 73 innings pitched.

Meanwhile, Will Oliver gets the call for the Patriots, making his 12th appearance and sixth start of the season. In his last outing on July 5 at New Britain, the righty allowed four runs (three earned) in seven innings, striking out a season-high nine while walking a season-high four and allowing six hits. It was an okay rebound from a postively dreadful start on June 30 at Lancaster, where Oliver was blasted for nine runs on 13 hits in four innings.
