Game 76: Ducks at Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium (Waldorf, Md.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (38-37, 2-3) continue their three-game series tonight against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (41-32, 3-1). The Ducks look to rebound from a tough loss Friday night, a tight contest which resulted in a last at-bat win for the Blue Crabs. Including tonight’s game, there are only two games remaining before the 2017 Atlantic League All-Star Game.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks fell to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-4 Friday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in the opener of a three-game series.
Angelo Songco started the scoring for the Ducks in the top of the first by lifting a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right field to score Fehlandt Lentini. Long Island loaded the bases later in the frame, but Southern Maryland starter Daryl Thompson was able to limit the damage.
In the bottom of the first the Blue Crabs got even against Ducks starter Dennis O’Grady, plating a run on a sacrifice fly by Zach Wilson.
The Ducks broke the tie in the top of the sixth, erupting for three runs against Thompson. With two outs, Giovanny Alfonzo lined a single into centerfield to score Marc Krauss, and then Dan Lyons doubled to left to score two more to hand Long Island a 4-1 lead.
Southern Maryland evened the ledger in the bottom of the sixth, responding for three runs against O’Grady, highlighted by a two-run single from Zach Cone.
After a 43-minute rain delay to start the top of the eighth inning the Blue Crabs took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth, plating an unearned run against Patrick Crider (0-5) to take a 5-4 lead. Cody Eppley worked around a two-out single from Quintin Berry in the top of the ninth to seal his 22nd save of the year and make a winner of Craig Stem (1-1).
Neither starter factored into the decision. O’Grady allowed four runs on six hits in 5.1 innings, walking two and striking out one. Thompson yielded four runs (one earned) on nine hits in six frames, walking one and striking out four.
Berry went 3-for-5 with a stolen base and Krauss added a 2-for-3 day with a walk and a run scored to lead the Ducks on offense.
ON THE MOUND: Left-handed pitcher Rafael Perez takes the mound for the Ducks in the middle game of the three-game series, making his 14th start of the season. Perez is 5-4 with a 3.84 ERA on the season, and has a 49:13 K:BB ratio in 68.0 innings. The southpaw has lost his last two starts as the Ducks have been shutout in both of them, including in his last outing on July 3 against Lancaster. Perez allowed four runs on six hits in five innings in a 5-0 Barnstormers triumph. The lefty has made one start against Southern Maryland this year, resulting in no decision on April 21, where Perez allowed three runs in three innings in his first appearance of the year.
Righty Drew Hayes gets the call for the Blue Crabs to make his 11th start of the season. The former Cincinnati Reds hurler is 3-3 with a 4.70 ERA on the season, and has struck out 39 and walked 21 in 51.2 innings this season. The former Vanderbilt Commodore spent seven years in the Reds system and is in his first year in the Atlantic League with Southern Maryland in 2017. In his last start against Long Island on July 2, Hayes was beat up for six runs on five hits in three innings and got the loss in a 10-5 Ducks win.
