Game 75: Ducks at Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium (Waldorf, Md.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (38-36, 2-2) begin their final series before the All-Star break tonight against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (40-32, 2-1). The Ducks swept the last series against the Blue Crabs this past weekend at Bethpage Ballpark, temporarily preventing the club from clinching the Freedom Division First Half Championship.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 7-6 on Thursday night in the finale of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.
The Ducks dented the scoreboard first with four runs in the second inning off of Barnstormers starter Tommy Shirley. Jordan Pacheco’s RBI double, Giovanny Alfonzo’s RBI single and a two-run double by Fehlandt Lentini highlighted the scoring.
Lancaster rallied back to tie the game with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth off of Ducks starter Alfredo Simon. A run-scoring wild pitch, RBI doubles by Vladimir Frias and Caleb Gindl and an RBI triple by Tyler Clark did the damage.
Lew Ford put the Ducks back in front at 5-4 with a leadoff solo home run to left in the bottom of the fifth. A run-scoring fielder’s choice off the bat of Lastings Milledge in the sixth tied the game once again. Long Island took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth on Pacheco’s RBI infield single to third base. However, Gindl’s two-run homer to right in the ninth gave the Barnstormers the lead for good.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Simon pitched four and two-thirds innings, yielding four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Shirley lasted three innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks with one strikeout. Scott Shuman (2-0) collected the win despite allowing a run on two hits and a walk in the eighth. Amalio Diaz (2-1) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits while striking out four in an inning and two-thirds. Anthony Carter picked up his 16th save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Five different Ducks had two hits apiece to lead the offense. Pacheco and Lentini each drove in two runs.
ON THE MOUND: Dennis O’Grady takes the mound for the Ducks in the series opener, making his 16th appearance and 12th start of the season. Overall, the right-hander is 4-5 with a 5.05 ERA for the Ducks, and has struck out 58 and walked 37 in 67.2 innings. O’Grady has struggled with command this year, walking at least two batters in 10 of his 11 starts, and at least three in eight. Last time out against Southern Maryland on July 2, the gritty righty threw 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking two while getting the win.
Meanwhile, Daryl Thompson gets the nod for Southern Maryland after being pushed back a day owing to a rain out yesterday. The All-Star righty is 5-4 with a 3.91 ERA, and in 89.2 innings, has struck out 73 and walked just 14. Last time out, Thompson allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings at Long Island on July 1, but got no decision in a 10-8 Ducks victory. In two starts against the Ducks this year, Thompson is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA.
