Game 74: Ducks vs. Barnstormers

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (38-35, 2-1) finish their four-game series with the Lancaster Barnstormers (39-33, 1-2) tonight. The Ducks will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs before a much-needed four-day break for the All-Star Game.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: Matt Larkins surprisingly struck out a career-high 10 batters as the Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 1-0 Wednesday night at Bethpage Ballpark.

Larkins (3-6) stole the spotlight, twirling a complete game shutout to secure the victory. The right-hander allowed just one hit on the night, a bloop single to right-center field off the bat of Vladimir Frias in the third inning. He surrendered two walks and threw a total of 109 pitches, 74 of which were strikes.

Long Island’s offense couldn’t do much either, but a run-scoring double from Lew Ford in the first inning plated Delta Cleary Jr. to give the Ducks their only run of the game.

Cleary Jr. finished with two hits to lead the Flock offensively. Ford and Dan Lyons also collected hits for Long Island.

ON THE MOUND: Long Island hands the ball to Alfredo Simon, making his fifth start of the season. Simon is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in his short Ducks career. He has managed to allow 20 hits and sport a 13:7 K:BB ratio in 16.1 innings with Long Island. Amazingly, the 6-6 right-hander was one of five representatives from the Cincinnati Reds on the 2014 National League All-Star team. Simon allowed four runs in four innings to the Barnstormers in his Ducks debut on June 16 at Clipper Magazine stadium.

Lefty Tommy Shirley gets the start for the Barnstormers tonight, and he will be making just his fourth appearance (second start) of the season. Shirley has one horrendous start under his belt this season, when he allowed seven runs (six earned) in four innings on April 23 at Somerset. He also has 2.1 scoreless innings of relief across his two appearances, also against Somerset. According to his bio on the Atlantic League website, Shirley once retired all 12 batters in a four out save.
