Game 73: Ducks vs. Barnstormers

DE6I0705GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (37-35, 1-1) continue their four-game series with the Lancaster Barnstormers (39-32, 1-1) after an offensive explosion on Independence Day. This is the third matchup between the Ducks and Barnstormers in the second half of the season, who will play 13 times in the second half.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-3 on Tuesday night before a past-capacity crowd of 7,248, the largest crowd of the season at Bethpage Ballpark.

Long Island took advantage of three Barnstormers miscues in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. A throwing error by Lancaster starter Jarret Leverett and a fielding error by third baseman Garrett Weber did the damage. Another run in the third inning on Angelo Songco’s sacrifice fly to center field stretched the lead to three.

The Barnstormers closed to within one in the third inning on a solo home run to right by Caleb Gindl and an RBI single to left by Lastings Milledge off of Ducks starter John Brownell. However, Dan Lyons launched a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the frame, restoring the lead to three at 5-2.

Long Island blew the game open with a four-run fifth inning. Ruben Gotay’s three-run home run down the left field line and a run-scoring error off the bat of Delta Cleary Jr. highlighted the frame. Weber lifted a sac fly to right in the sixth to trim Lancaster’s deficit to 9-3, but Anderson De La Rosa flew out to leave the bases loaded.

Brownell (6-1) earned the win, tossing six innings of three-run ball, yielding five hits and three walks while striking out four. Leverett (4-4) suffered the loss, surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on 15 hits and a walk over four and one-third innings. Patrick Crider, Rob Rogers and David Aardsma combined to retire nine straight Barnstormers batters over the final three innings and struck out three.

Giovanny Alfonzo had four hits in four at bats to lead the Flock, and Fehlandt Lentini added three hits. Gotay finished with two hits, three RBI and two runs, while Lyons drove in two runs and scored twice.

ON THE MOUND: Long Island hands the ball to Matt Larkins to make his 15th appearance and 14th start of the season. Larkins is 2-6 with a 4.50 ERA this season and has struck out 60 and walked only 19 in 72.0 innings. The right-hander’s 7.5 K/9.0 IP ratio is the highest mark of his career, which he has impressively recorded while maintaining a steady walk rate with the rest of his career. In his last start on June 30 against Southern Maryland, Larkins got no decision after allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits in seven innings. The Ducks won the game 5-3, and Larkins struck out five and walked none. He has not faced the Barnstormers yet this season.

The Barnstormers will roll with former Baltimore Oriole Brad Bergesen, who will be making his 13th start of the year. So far, he is 4-5 with a 4.75 ERA and has a 51:18 K:BB ratio in 70.0 innings. The right-hander has allowed 83 hits and opponents are hitting .289 against him. In his last start on June 30 against Somerset, Bergesen was rocked for six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, but got no decision in a 9-7 Lancaster victory. In his lone appearance against the Ducks on May 27, Bergesen threw five shutout innings and allowed just two hits in a 10-0 Barnstormers win.
