Game 72: Ducks vs. Barnstormers
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (36-35, 0-1) continue their four-game series with the Lancaster Barnstormers (39-31, 1-0) at Bethpage Ballpark on Independence Day. The Ducks are in the midst of a seven-game homestand which began with a three-game sweep of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks played for a past-capacity crowd of 7,167 fans Monday night at Bethpage Ballpark, but fell to the Lancaster Barnstormers, 5-0. Monday marked the third time this season and the Atlantic League-record 666th time overall that Bethpage Ballpark has seen a past-capacity crowd.
The Barnstormers took the lead in the top of the first against Ducks lefty Rafael Perez. Sean Halton drove home Caleb Gindl with a two-out double to hand Lancaster the early 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, the Barnstormers tacked on three more tallies against Perez (5-4) on five hits, including a two-run single from Gindl. The lefty completed five innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out five and not issuing a walk. It was the fifth time that Perez has not allowed a base on balls in a start this season.
Long Island threatened in the top of the sixth against Lancaster starter Rommie Lewis, placing runners on first and second with two outs, but could not push across a run. Lewis (5-5) did not allow a Duck runner to reach third base in his seven shutout frames, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six.
Zac Treece threw a scoreless sixth inning and John Lannan threw a 1-2-3 seventh before allowing a run in the top of the eighth. He departed with two outs and the bases loaded, but Tyler Levine was able to strike out Rico Noel to end the threat. Levine remained in the contest to toss a scoreless ninth.
Lew Ford sparked the Ducks at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double. It was Ford’s third three-hit game of the season.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks send John Brownell to the mound to right the ship, making his 14th start of the season. The All-Star righty is 5-1 with a 2.76 ERA for the Ducks this season, and is coming off of one of his best starts of the season. On June 29 at Sugar Land, Brownie threw eight shutout innings, scattering four hits and one walk in a game eventually won by the Skeeters 3-2 in 11 innings. In his lone outing against Lancaster this year, Brownell got no decision in allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings on May 28. The Ducks won that contest, 5-4.
Lancaster counters with former Long Island Duck lefty Jarret Leverett, making his 13th start of the year. The Barnstormer southpaw is 4-3 with a 5.11 ERA, and has allowed an eye-popping 79 hits in 63.1 innings this year (.311 opponent’s AVG). In his last start against the Ducks on June 18, Leverett was touched up for six runs in six innings and got the loss in a 6-2 Long Island triumph. Overall against his former club this year, Leverett is 1-1 with an unsightly 8.18 ERA and has yielded 16 hits and 10 runs in 11.0 innings.
