lew-ford-5.jpgGAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (30-29) host the Somerset Patriots (36-23) in the final game of a four-game series. Long Island looks for the series win after taking two of the first three games, and would move to within five games of Somerset for the first-half division crown with just 10 games left with a win.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-2 on Wednesday night in the third game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Both sides were held off the scoreboard over the first five and a half innings. Ducks starter Alfredo Simon pitched well in his Bethpage Ballpark debut, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and four walks while striking out four. Patriots starter Jerome Williams pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball before leaving with an injury and gave up four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Long Island broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run home run to right-center field by Marc Krauss off of Alex Gouin. Somerset pulled even at two in the top of the eighth with an RBI single by Greg Golson and a bases loaded walk to Christian Marrero from Patrick Crider.

The Ducks took the lead back for good in the bottom of the frame. RBI singles by Alex Burg and Giovanny Alfonzo put the Flock back in front 4-2.

Zac Treece (4-1) picked up the win after recording the final out of the eighth inning, leaving the bases loaded. Justin Wright (2-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits in his one inning of relief. Amalio Diaz earned his second save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.

Krauss, Burg, Alfonzo and Angelo Songco each had two hits to pace the Flock.

ON THE MOUND: Long Island sends right-hander Dennis O’Grady to the mound to make his ninth start of the season and 13th overall appearance. O’Grady is coming off his roughest start of the season on June 17 at Lancaster when he allowed season-team-highs with nine runs and 12 hits in 5.0 innings of work in a 10-0 Barnstormers win. The right-hander is 3-3 with a 4.32 ERA on the season, and has struck out 50 batters but walked 26 in 50.0 IP.

Somerset counters with Dave Kubiak, making his second start of the series, although his first outing on Monday was cancelled out by rain. Kubiak is 2-5 with a 3.58 ERA on the season in 11 appearances (eight starts). The 6-7 righty has struck out 56 and walked only 15 in 52.2 innings, but has suffered from a lack of run and bullpen support. In his last start which counted for his stats, Kubiak threw 6.1 innings against the Ducks on June 14, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out six and walking two while getting no decision in a 7-6 Patriots 10-inning win.
