TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (27-28) take on the Lancaster Barnstormers (30-25) to complete a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium this afternoon. The Barnstormers have won the first two games of this series, and have an impressive 5-1 lead in the overall season series. This is the last time that the Ducks and Barnstormers will meet in the first half, but the clubs have 13 scheduled contests in the second half of the season.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 10-0 on Saturday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The Barnstormers got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first, taking the lead two batters in when Blake Gailen connected on a solo home run off Dennis O’Grady. Two batters later, K.C. Hobson cracked a two-run shot and a Garrett Weber RBI double later in the frame ran the Barnstormers lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the second, Lancaster took a 5-0 lead when Rico Noel doubled and scored on a Gailen single. A fifth-inning solo homer from Hobson ran the advantage to 6-0.

The rout was on in the bottom of the sixth, when the Barnstormers sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs to extend a 10-0 advantage. O’Grady (2-3) faced three batters in the inning without recording an out, and ultimately got the loss in going five-plus innings and allowing nine runs on 12 hits.

The Ducks, meanwhile, loaded the bases against Rommie Lewis in the third but could not score, and loaded them again the eighth against reliever Kevin Munson, but again could not score.

After Eury De La Rosa allowed three inherited runners to score in the sixth as well as a run of his own, Tyler Levine threw a scoreless seventh, and Fehlandt Lentini pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, including striking out Hobson.

Lew Ford and Elmer Reyes had two hits each for Long Island, with Reyes’ eighth-inning double representing the only extra-base hit the club recorded.

ON THE MOUND: Long Island looks to salvage the final game of the series behind ace left-hander Rafael Perez. He makes his 10th start of the season this afternoon, and sports a 4-2 record with a 3.80 ERA. The former big-leaguer had a rough outing his last time out on June 13 against the Somerset Patriots, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in just 3.2 innings, but has been great this year. Removing the nine runs in eight innings that the southpaw has allowed to Somerset this season, his ERA drops down to 2.43. This will be Perez’ first start against Lancaster this season.

The Barnstormers look for the sweep behind lefty and former Duck Jarret Leverett, who makes his 10th start on the season. He is 4-1 with a 5.03 ERA, and earned a win over Long Island on May 27 in his only other start against the Ducks this season. In that outing Leverett allowed four runs on six hits in five innings, but got the win in a 6-4 Barnstormer triumph. Last time out on June 13, the lefty allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in 6.2 innings at Bridgeport, but got hung with his first loss of the season.
