Game 55: Ducks at Barnstormers
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:30 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium (Lancaster, Pa.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (27-27) take on the Lancaster Barnstormers (29-25) in the middle game of a three-game series tonight at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Barnstormers have won four out of the first five matchups with the Ducks this season, including taking three of four at Bethpage Ballpark last month.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks pounded out 10 hits, but fell to the Lancaster Barnstormers 7-3 on Friday night in the opening game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Long Island (27-27) starter Alfredo Simon was perfect through three innings in his Ducks debut, but ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing four runs on three hits. The big blow was a two-run home run from Garrett Weber.
The Ducks got on the board in the top of the fifth against Bryan Evans (4-2) of the Barnstormers (29-25) when Elmer Reyes drove home Delta Cleary Jr. with an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-1.
Simon (0-1) lasted four innings in his first outing of the season, allowing four runs on three hits, walking one and striking out four. Henry Hirsch relieved him and threw two scoreless innings before Jim Fuller yielded a run in the bottom of the seventh to give Lancaster a 5-1 lead.
Marc Krauss hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth bringing the Ducks to within 5-2, but the Barnstormers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to extend a 7-2 advantage.
In the top of the ninth, Anthony Vega scored on a Lew Ford single to narrow the gap to 7-3, and the Ducks eventually loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate. However, they couldn’t break through against Anthony Carter, who recorded his 12th save of the season.
ON THE MOUND: Long Island sends Dennis O’Grady to the mound to make his eighth start of the season and his 12th overall appearance. O’Grady is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA on the season, and has struck out 45 batters in 45.0 innings this year. Last time out on June 11 against Bridgeport, the righty lasted five innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out five. In his one previous outing against Lancaster this season, O’Grady was roughed up – allowing a season-high six runs on nine hits in four innings in game one of a May 27 doubleheader.
The Barnstormers will roll with southpaw Rommie Lewis, making his 10th start of the season and 11th overall appearance. Lewis is in his fifth year in the Atlantic League, having previously spent three years with York and one with Bridgeport. Lewis has been struggling lately for Lancaster, sporting a 9.64 ERA (15 ER/14.0 IP) over his last three starts. The lefty has lost his last four decisions, and is 2-5 overall on the season with a 6.94 ERA. Lewis has not faced Long Island yet in 2017.
