Game 53: Ducks at Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, N.J.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (26-26) continue their three-game series with the Liberty Division-leading Somerset Patriots (32-20) tonight. The Ducks and Patriots are separated by six games in the standings and will play each other five times in the final 18 games of the first half.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks fell to the Somerset Patriots 7-6 in a walk off Wednesday night at TD Bank Ballpark in the middle game of a three-game series.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third, when the Patriots sent nine batters to the plate and scored three runs against John Brownell. The big blow in the frame was a two-run home run by Somerset catcher Adam Donachie.
The Ducks would get on the board against Patriots starter Dave Kubiak in the top of the fifth when Marc Krauss launched a solo home run to right field. The blast was Krauss’ fifth of the season and second in his last two games played.
In the bottom of the fifth, Somerset pulled back ahead by three when Greg Golson walked, stole second base, and scored on an Aharon Eggleston double. Brownell was done after the fifth, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out three. He did not factor into the decision.
Long Island broke out the bats and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh against four Somerset pitchers, with the highlight coming on an Alex Burg three-run, opposite-field home run. However, the Patriots answered back with two runs off Eury De La Rosa in the bottom of the frame to claim a 6-5 advantage.
Dan Lyons drove a double off the wall to lead off the top of the ninth against Jon Hunton, and he scored two batters later on an Anthony Vega sacrifice fly to tie the game at six.
With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Carlos Guzman and Alfredo Rodriguez collected back-to-back singles against Patrick Crider, and pinch hitter Yovan Gonzalez won the game with another base hit to left, scoring Guzman.
Crider (0-3) was tagged with the loss for the Ducks, while Will Oliver (2-0) got the win after a scoreless inning of relief for the Patriots.
ON THE MOUND: Long Island looks to salvage the final game of this three-game series with Matt Larkins on the mound. The right-hander sports a deceptive 1-5 record and 5.26 ERA heading into tonight’s outing, as he has thrown three straight quality starts. In those three combined starts, Larkins has a 1-1 record with a 2.41 ERA (5 ER/18.2 IP), and has struck out 16 and walked six. The UC-Riverside product has faced the Somerset Patriots just once this year, allowing one unearned run on three hits in four innings in his first start of the year on April 26.
The Patriots counter with right-hander Lucas Irvine, who enters the matchup with a 3-1 record and a 4.88 ERA. However, that number is skewed by a few bad starts in May, as Irvine is 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA (5 ER/18.0 IP) in his last three outings. Last time out, the Kansas City, Missouri native allowed three runs on six hits in six innings at the New Britain Bees on June 9, getting the win in a 12-7 Somerset triumph. Irvine has not faced the Ducks this season.
