Game 52: Ducks at Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, N.J.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (26-25) continue their three-game series with the Liberty Division-leading Somerset Patriots (31-20) tonight. The Ducks and Patriots are separated by five games in the standings and will play each other six times in the final 19 games of the first half.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: Despite a two home run performance from Angelo Songco, the Long Island Ducks fell to the Somerset Patriots 7-2 Tuesday night at TD Bank Ballpark in the opener of a three-game series.
The Ducks got on the board first in the top of the second, taking a 1-0 lead on a Songco solo home run off Patriots starter Rick Teasley.
Long Island’s advantage was erased in the bottom of the second, when Tyler Bortnick connected for a two-run single off Rafael Perez to put Somerset ahead 2-1. The Patriots would tack on an unearned run in the bottom of the third, and erupted for four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead, ignited by five hits and a catcher’s interference call.
Perez lasted 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits, striking out two and not issuing a walk. He gave way to Henry Hirsch, who threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Songco launched a mammoth home run over the wall in right field for his second round-tripper of the game. The Ducks outfielder now has two multi-homer games this season and leads the club with 13 long balls. Teasley allowed two home runs in his seven innings of work, striking out two and not walking a batter.
Tyler Levine allowed one hit in two innings and kept the Patriots off the scoreboard, but the Ducks were unable to muster a comeback against the Patriots bullpen.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks look to get back on the winning track behind ace righy John Brownell in the middle game of the series. Brownie makes his team-leading 11th start of the season in tonight’s contest, and sports a 4-1 record with a 2.81 ERA, the best mark among Ducks starting pitchers. While his strikeout rate has slid from 7.8 K/9 last year to 5.3 K/9 so far this season, Brownell has maintained success by limiting hits and walks. The Omaha, Nebraska resident struggled in his last start on June 9 against Bridgeport, allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits in seven innings. However, most of the damage was done in only two innings, as he was his usual self for most of the outing.
Somerset sends right-hander David Kubiak to the mound, making his eighth start of the season and his 11th overall appearance. The 6-7 hurler has been a hard-luck pitcher for the Patriots this season, sporting just a 2-5 record but a 3.69 ERA. Kubiak has struck out 50 batters in 46.1 innings pitched this season and has issued just 13 walks while sporting a very strong 1.12 WHIP. In his last two starts, Kubiak has struck out 15 batters and walked just three in 13.1 innings, but has gone 0-1. Against Long Island on May 21, the Riverhead, New York native gave up five runs on five hits in six innings, getting the loss in an 8-1 Ducks win.
