Game 51: Ducks at Patriots
The Ducks scored a pair of waddle-off victories over the Patriots in the last installment of their season series in May at Bethpage Ballpark. Giovanny Alfonzo was responsible for both of the game-winning plays.
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, N.J.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (26-24) hit the road to begin a pivotal three-game series with the Liberty Division-leading Somerset Patriots (30-20) tonight. The Ducks and Patriots are separated by four games in the standings and will play each other seven more times before the end of the first half. The Ducks recently swept a three-game set with the Patriots at Bethpage Ballpark in May.
SUNDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks used a five-run outburst in the sixth inning to blow past the Bridgeport Bluefish 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Bethpage Ballpark.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth, when Dennis O’Grady allowed a one-out triple to Andrew Lambo. Lambo scored on a wild pitch to give the Bluefish a 1-0 lead in the middle innings.
O’Grady allowed just the one run in five innings of work, scattering four hits and three walks while striking out five and getting no decision. Eury De La Rosa allowed a two-out double to Sean Burroughs in the sixth, but threw a scoreless inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Ducks offense exploded for a five-spot to take a lead they would never surrender. Danny Burawa walked the only three batters he faced to load the bases with nobody out, before Brian Moran struck out Angelo Songco for the first out.
Zac Grotz then came in and promptly allowed Jordan Pacheco to poke a two-run single through the right side of the infield. Elmer Reyes followed with an RBI single, and Marc Krauss broke the game open with a two-run double to extend the Long Island lead to 5-1.
Zac Treece and Patrick Crider turned in scoreless frames of relief in the seventh and eighth innings, and homers from Songco and Krauss in the bottom of the eighth plated three more runs for the Ducks.
Rob Rogers worked around an infield single in the ninth to close out the 8-1 win in a non-save situation.
ON THE MOUND: Long Island opens the series by sending southpaw Rafael Perez to the slab, making his ninth start of the season. The former big leaguer is 4-1 with a 3.05 ERA on the year, and has struck out 35 and walked just eight in 41.1 innings pitched. In his last start on June 8 at New Britain, Perez threw six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out three and not issuing a walk. In his last three starts, the lefty has a 0.60 ERA (1 ER/15.0 IP), and has struck out 14 and walked just two, going 2-0. That includes a start against Somerset on May 19 at Bethpage Ballpark, where he went five scoreless innings, striking out six.
The Patriots roll with Rick Teasley, making his 10th appearance of the season and sixth start overall. The port paw is 4-1 on the season with a 2.21 ERA and has struck out 28 and walked nine in 44.2 innings pitched this season. In his last start on June 7 against Bridgeport, Teasley allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in 7.2 innings, getting the win in a 7-2 Patriots victory. In two appearances against the Ducks this season, Teasley sports a 1.54 ERA (2 ER/11.2 IP) and has allowed six hits while striking out 11 and not walking a batter.
