Game 50: Ducks vs. Bluefish
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (25-24) look to take the rubber game of a three-game series the Bridgeport Bluefish (28-22) this afternoon at Bethpage Ballpark. The first two games of the series have been decided by a total of three runs, and the 2017 Ferry Cup currently swings in favor of the Ducks by a five games to four margin. Today’s contest will be the final game between the Ducks and Bluefish of the first half.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks entertained a standing-room-only crowd of 7,186 Saturday night at Bethpage Ballpark by defeating the Bridgeport Bluefish 3-1.
Bridgeport got on the board first with a solo home run from Andrew Lambo to lead off the top of the third against Matt Larkins, but could muster nothing more.
In the top of the fourth, Lew Ford knotted the score at one with a solo shot of his own against Bluefish starter Jonathan Albaladejo. The Ducks tacked on two more in the fifth on a solo homer from Dan Lyons and an RBI fielder’s choice groundout from Angelo Songco.
Larkins (1-5) was terrific, turning in 6.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and walking tow and striking out three. The outing marked the right-hander’s third straight quality start.
In a bases loaded, two-out jam in the seventh, Patrick Crider entered and struck out Lambo to end the threat. Bridgeport would not push a runner into scoring position for the rest of the game.
Amalio Diaz worked around a two-out infield single in the eighth to preserve the 3-1 lead, and Chin-Hui Tsao nailed down his sixth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks send right-hander Dennis O’Grady to the mound in the rubber game of the series with the Bluefish. The Duke product is making his 11th overall appearance and seventh start of the season, and has a 2-2 record and 3.15 ERA. In his last outing on June 7 at the New Britain Bees, O’Grady threw five innings of one-run ball, striking out seven but issuing four walks. The Floral Park native has an impressive 9.0 K/9 rate, but is issuing a troublesome 4.5 BB/9 this season. O’Grady has made one appearance against the Bluefish this season, throwing two shutout innings on June 2.
The Bluefish roll with lefty Chris Rearick in the series finale, making his ninth start of the season. The southpaw is 4-1 with a 3.38 ERA on the season, and defeated Long Island in his last start on June 4. In that outing at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, Rearick threw six innings and allowed just one run on four hits, walking two and striking out seven. He also defeated the Ducks on May 24 at Bridgeport, fanning a season-high 10 in six shutout innings of work.
