Game 40: Ducks vs. Skeeters
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (19-20) complete their three-game series with the rubber game against the Sugar Land Skeeters (20-20) tonight at Bethpage Ballpark. Tonight’s skirmish will be the third time out of 20 scheduled contests that these clubs have faced each other during the 2017 season.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks fell 13-1 in the middle game of a three-game series to the Sugar Land Skeeters Wednesday night at Bethpage Ballpark.
Ducks starter Eury De La Rosa struggled in his first start of the season, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits in two innings of work. Tyler Levine relieved him and yielded five runs (three earned) in 2.1 frames. Rob Rogers allowed two runs in three innings, while Patrick Crider and Jim Fuller closed out the final 1.2 innings with scoreless work.
Long Island plated its lone run in the bottom of the seventh when Fehlandt Lentini drove a triple to left center and scored on a broken bat single from Angelo Songco. It was Lentini’s first triple of the season and the 73rd of his 14-year independent baseball career, an all-time record.
The Ducks recorded just one other hit in the game, an infield single from Lew Ford in the bottom of the ninth as they fell to the Skeeters by a lopsided margin.
ON THE MOUND: The rubber game features Henry Hirsch making his Long Island Ducks debut after being signed earlier in the day. The righty spent the last the past four seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, reaching as high as the Double-A Altoona Curve of the Eastern League. Hirsch spent a majority of the 2016 season with the High-A Bradenton Marauders of the Florida State League, going 6-3 in 38 appearances (13 starts) with a 3.75 ERA.
The Skeeters roll with former Duck Bobby Blevins, making his return to Bethpage Ballpark after spending parts of five seasons on Long Island. Last year Blevins pitched to a 2-12 record with a 5.51 ERA. This year, Blevins is 3-1 with an ERA of 5.12 in eight appearances (four starts). The righty went 16-22 as a member of the Ducks, and was part of the back-to-back Atlantic League Championship teams in 2012 and 2013.
