Game 39: Ducks vs. Skeeters

With the veteran presence of Lew Ford, the Ducks look to make it three wins in a row tonight.

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (19-19) resume their three-game series with the Sugar Land Skeeters (19-20) after a thrilling waddle-off win Tuesday night. Tonight’s skirmish will be the second time out of 20 scheduled contests that these clubs have faced each other during the 2017 season.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks scored their second consecutive waddle-off win 3-2 over the Sugar Land Skeeters in 11 innings Tuesday night at Bethpage Ballpark.

With Marc Krauss at third after a two-base throwing error from Skeeters catcher Albert Cordero, Giovanny Alfonzo hit a dribbler up the third base line that went for a game-winning infield single.

The Skeeters kicked off the scoring in the top of the first against Ducks starting pitcher Matt Larkins, taking an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Hector Olivera.

After the rocky start to the game, the righty settled in and turned in a quality start. Larkins tossed six innings allowing just the one run on four hits, walking four but striking out six. He got no decision.

Sugar Land extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh against Zac Treece and Jim Fuller when Andy Wilkins doubled to centerfield on a ball that Delta Cleary Jr. lost above the lights.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Ducks finally got on the board after threatening several times throughout the game. Jordan Pacheco walked, stole second base and scored on an Alfonzo single to cut the Skeeters lead to 2-1.

After Rob Rogers held the score at 2-1 with a scoreless inning of relief in the top of the ninth, Krauss blasted a solo home run to centerfield in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at two.

Krauss led off the bottom of the 11th by drawing a walk from Sean Gleason. With two outs, Cordero attempted to back pick on Krauss at first and the throw went wild up the right field line and the runner advanced to third.

On the next pitch Alfonzo tapped a 2-2 offering up the third base line that Bryan Pounds couldn’t field cleanly and Krauss scored the winning tally.

ON THE MOUND: The Ducks call on southpaw Eury De La Rosa to make his first start of the season tonight. In six relief appearances this year, De La Rosa owns a 1-0 record with a 2.16 ERA. The diminutive port paw’s last outing came on May 27, where he threw three scoreless innings from the bullpen against the Lancaster Barnstormers. This marks the first time this season that De La Rosa will face the Skeeters. He threw five scoreless innings across three appearances against Sugar Land in 2016.

Sugar Land sends righty Michael Nix to the bump, making his 10th appearance of the year and eighth overall start. Nix, a Skeeter since 2012, has a 2-5 record with a 4.29 ERA this season, and has allowed 34 hits in 35.2 innings pitched. The former Auburn Tiger last appeared on May 27 at York, allowing two runs on three hits in an inning of work. Tonight will be the first time that Nix faces the Ducks since September 28, when the righty threw six shutout innings and got the win in Game Two of the 2016 Atlantic League Championship Series.
