Game 37: Ducks vs. Barnstormers

Brownell-Stares-InGAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (17-19) host the Lancaster Barnstormers (21-15) for the final game of a four-game series this afternoon. Long Island looks to salvage the Sunday matinee after dropping the first three games of the series to Lancaster.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Barnstormers swept a day/night doubleheader with the Ducks Saturday afternoon at Bethpage Ballpark.

In the opener, the Ducks took an early 1-0 lead when Delta Cleary Jr. plated Fehlandt Lentini with a first inning single off former Duck Jarret Leverett. Lancaster responded back with a pair of runs in the top of the second against Dennis O’Grady to take a 2-1 lead.

After the Barnstormers extended their lead to 3-1, the Ducks struck for three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 advantage. Cleary Jr. struck for another run-scoring single, and Angelo Songco followed with a two-run home run to account for the outburst. It was Songco’s team-leading ninth home run of the season.

Lancaster took the lead for good in the top of the fourth on a three-run home run from K.C. Hobson. After O’Grady gave way after four innings, Eury De La Rosa tossed three shutout innings from the bullpen to complete the contest.

In game two, the Barnstormers took the lead in the first inning off Tim Melville and never looked back. The Ducks were unable to muster much offensively, managing just four hits en route to being shut out in the nine inning contest.

Six Ducks pitchers combined to strike out a season-high 14 batters. Cleary notched a pair of hits to lead the offense.

ON THE MOUND: The Ducks will try to take the final game of the series behind John Brownell. The righty is 3-0 on the season with a 2.49 ERA in his seven starts. In his last outing on May 23 at Bridgeport, Brownell got the win after throwing seven shutout innings, striking out three and walking two in a 3-0 Ducks triumph. This will be his first start of the season against the Barnstormers.

Lancaster goes for the sweep behind left-hander Nate Reed, who will be making his sixth start of the season and first against the Ducks. The southpaw is 0-1 on the season with a 5.14 ERA. In his last start on May 22 at Southern Maryland, Reed allowed six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings, getting tagged with the loss.
