Games 35 & 36: Ducks vs. Barnstormers

Melville-Pitching-5-21GAME TIMES/LOCATION: 1:05 pm and 6:35 pm at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (17-17) host the Lancaster Barnstormers (19-15) for a Saturday doubleheader. After the Barnstormers escaped with a one-run victory in Friday’s series opener, the Ducks look to strike back today. Game one will be a seven inning contest, and the nightcap will last a full nine frames.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Ducks fell to the Barnstormers 4-3 Friday night at Bethpage Ballpark.

Ducks starting pitcher Keith Couch made his return after missing nearly a month with arm soreness and was touched up for three runs in 1.1 innings, before being removed with an apparent injury in the top of the second.

Tyler Levine  provided solid long relief for Long Island, allowing just one additional run in 2.2 innings.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third, the Ducks started their charge. Marc Krauss struck for an RBI double to plate the first run for Long Island, and Cody Puckett followed with a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Jim Fuller threw two scoreless innings, and Zac TreecePatrick Crider, and David Aardsma each added scoreless stanzas to keep the Barnstormers’ charge at bay, but the offense failed to provide any fireworks in the game’s final innings.

The Ducks did manage to push the tying run to third base in the bottom of the ninth, in the form of pinch runner Anthony Vega, but couldn’t push him home to score.

ON THE MOUND: In game one of the twinbill, the Ducks send Dennis O’Grady to the bump. O’Grady is 1-1 with an Atlantic League-leading 2.17 ERA this season in seven appearances (four starts). Last time out, the former Duke Blue Devil took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the Somerset Patriots, allowing a single to the first batter in the frame before being removed to a standing ovation. O’Grady has fanned 29 batters in 29 innings this season.

Lancaster counters with former Duck Jarret Leverett in the opener. The lefty is 1-0 with an unsightly 8.52 ERA this season in five games started. Last time out on May 20, Leverett allowed two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings against the New Britain Bees. His lone win of the season came on May 13, in an 11-9 Barnstormer triumph at Sugar Land, where Leverett allowed seven runs in 5.1 innings.

In the nightcap, Tim Melville heads to the bump for the Ducks. The righty enters the game as one of Long Island’s hottest pitchers, having thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings in his last two starts. In that span, the former Cincinnati Reds hurler has allowed just seven hits, while sporting an impressive 11:4 K:BB ratio. Unsurprisingly, Melville has been credited with the win in each of his last two outings.

The Barnstormers answer with former big leaguer Brad Bergesen. The right-hander is 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA on the season for Lancaster in five previous starts. Best known for his tenure with the Baltimore Orioles, Bergesen was lit up by New Britain in his last start, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits in six innings on May 21.
