Game 30: Ducks vs. Patriots

DE6I2357.JPGGAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:35 pm at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (14-15) finish off the homestand strong against the Somerset Patriots (18-12). The Ducks have taken the first two games of the three-game series on waddle-off wins, and are 4-1 in the first five games of the homestand. Long Island has won three of the first five contests with Somerset this season, with all but one of the games being close, one-run games. A win would get the Ducks back to the .500 mark on the season.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks waddled off with a 4-3 win for the second straight night over the Somerset Patriots on Saturday at Bethpage Ballpark.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth Giovanny Alfonzo hit a dribbler up the middle that was booted by Tyler Bortnick, allowing Marc Krauss to score the winning run.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fifth, when Alex Burg launched a solo home run to left off Patriots starter Rick Teasley to put the Ducks up 1-0.

Dennis O’Grady pitched his best game of the season for Long Island, allowing only one hit in seven-plus innings of work, striking out a season-high eight. He was relieved by Chin-Hui Tsao in the eighth, who loaded the bases twice but escaped without a blemish.

In the bottom of the eighth, Dan Lyons scored on an Anthony Vega base hit to pad the lead to 2-0. However, Somerset plated three in the top of the ninth off Eric Gagne to take a 3-2 advantage.

Krauss doubled off Ronnie Shaban to drive home Angelo Songco and tie the game with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, and three batters later, Bortnick’s error won it for the Ducks.

It was the Ducks second waddle off win of the season, and second in as many nights.

ON THE MOUND: The Ducks send Tim Melville to the mound going for the series sweep of the rival Patriots. The righty is 1-2 on the season with a 3.19 ERA, and is coming off his best start of the year. On May 16 vs. York, the former Cincinnati Red threw five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out three en route to his first win of the season. Melville has not faced the Patriots yet this season.

Somerset answers with David Kubiak, making his seventh appearance and fourth start of the year. The righty is 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA, and has struck out 27 batters in 22.0 innings. On May 16 vs. Sugar Land, Kubiak went six shutout innings and struck out nine to get the win. The SUNY Albany product has faced Long Island once this year and got no decision after allowing one run in five innings on April 26 in a start.
