Game 29: Ducks vs. Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 pm at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (13-15) look to capitalize on their exciting waddle off win last night by playing host to the Liberty Division-leading Somerset Patriots (18-11). The Ducks and Patriots have met four times already this season, with the season series being tied at two wins each heading into tonight’s skirmish.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks scored their first waddle off win of the season with a ferocious comeback in the ninth inning to defeat the Somerset Patriots 4-3 Friday night at Bethpage Ballpark.
Trailing 3-1 with two outs and the bases empty in the ninth, the Ducks rallied to plate three runs against Jon Hunton, including the game winner on an RBI single from Giovanny Alfonzo.
Long Island got on the board in the bottom of the first, when Angelo Songco singled to centerfield to score Fehlandt Lentini and hand the Ducks a 1-0 lead.
Ducks starting pitcher Rafael Perez began the game with five scoreless innings, before being pulled shortly before the start of the sixth with an apparent injury. He was replaced by Eury De La Rosa, who allowed a solo home run to Olmo Rosario to tie the game at one.
Somerset opened up a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh, when Amalio Diaz allowed a two-run single to Justin Pacchioli.
Zac Treece, Patrick Crider and Chin-Hui Tsao held the score at 3-1 Patriots, setting the stage for the comeback.
Elmer Reyes lined a two-out single to centerfield, and Marc Krauss walked and was pinch ran for by Dan Lyons. Alex Burg singled to left to score Reyes to cut the lead to 3-2, and Cody Puckett walked to load the bases. Delta Cleary Jr. collected an infield single to tie the game at three, and Alfonzo delivered the game-winning hit on the first pitch from Hunton.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks send Dennis O’Grady to the mound to make his fourth start of the season and seventh overall appearance. So far, the righty is 1-1 with a sterling 2.86 ERA, and has struck out 21 batters in 22.0 innings pitched. O’Grady has faced Somerset once this season in a relief appearance, and threw three scoreless innings at TD Bank Ballpark on April 26. In his last start on May 14 at New Britain, O’Grady got the loss after allowing two runs in four innings on six hits.
Somerset answers with lefty Rick Teasley, who sports a 2-0 record and 1.68 ERA in his first five appearances (one start) this season. In his last outing at Southern Maryland, the southpaw allowed five runs (two earned) in four innings, getting no decision in a 13-5 Somerset victory. Teasley has faced the Ducks once this season, going four scoreless innings in relief on April 26, yielding just one hit in the process.
