Game 28: Ducks vs. Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 pm at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (12-15) continue their six-game homestand by beginning a new three-game series with the Liberty Division-leading Somerset Patriots (18-10). The Ducks and Patriots have met three times already this season at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, New Jersey, with the Patriots taking two contests.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks drew 10 walks but fell to the York Revolution 8-4 Thursday night at Bethpage Ballpark.
York got off to a fast start when Michael Burgess connected for a three-run home run off of Long Island starter Matt Larkins in the top of the first. The Ducks responded with a run when Fehlandt Lentini doubled and scored on back-to-back wild pitches.
The Revs plated another three in the top of the third to take a 6-1 lead, with a two-run single from Burgess acting as the big blow in the frame. York tacked on additional runs in the fourth and fifth innings against reliever Tyler Levine.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cody Puckett singled to left field to score Marc Krauss and cut the lead to 6-2. Krauss finished 1-2 with a double and an RBI, a run scored and two walks.
With York up 8-2, Angelo Songco hit a solo home run, his seventh of the season, in the bottom of the fifth, and later in the frame Krauss doubled home Elmer Reyes to cut the lead to 8-4.
Jim Fuller added a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for the Ducks, and combined with Rob Rogers, Patrick Crider and Tyler Wilson to retire the final 12 York batters of the game.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks send lefty Rafael Perez to the mound in the series opener, making his sixth start of the season. The southpaw is 2-1 with a 4.44 ERA this season and is coming off of five strong innings at New Britain on Sunday in his last start. Perez allowed a run on five hits and struck out five, getting the win in game one of a doubleheader. In his one outing this season against Somerset, Perez allowed six runs (four earned) on 11 hits in 4.1 innings.
Somerset answers with former major leaguer Mitch Atkins, who will also be making his sixth start of the year. Atkins is 2-3 with a 4.72 ERA on the season. Last time out on May 14 at Southern Maryland, the righty allowed seven runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings, getting tagged with the loss. Atkins spent last year in the Boston Red Sox organization with Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland, and has not faced the Ducks yet this season.
