Game 26: Ducks vs. Revolution
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 pm at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (11-14) continue their three-game series with the York Revolution (9-15) tonight at Bethpage Ballpark. The Ducks and Revs are squaring off for the ninth time this season, and tonight marks the penultimate skirmish of the first half for the two clubs. Long Island owns a dazzling 6-2 record against York so far. After this current three-game set, the Revolution won’t square off against the Ducks until July 31.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks took the lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back as they dispatched the York Revolution 2-1 at Bethpage Ballpark Tuesday night.
Fehlandt Lentini reached base on an error to start the game and promptly stole second base against Revolution starter Steve Janas. After moving to third on a passed ball, Lentini scored on a sacrifice fly from Delta Cleary Jr. Two batters later, Angelo Songco blasted a solo home run to extend the Ducks’ lead to 2-0.
The home run was Songco’s team-leading sixth of the season, which also ties him for second in the Atlantic League with several others.
Ducks starting pitcher Tim Melville was strong on the hill, notching his first win of the season. The righty (1-2) threw five shutout innings, scattering four hits, walking two and striking out three.
Zac Treece allowed an unearned run to score in the sixth as the Revolution narrowed the gap to 2-1, but Amalio Diaz and Eric Gagne threw scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth.
In the ninth, David Aardsma worked around a hit by striking out two York batters to notch his fifth save of the season.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks look to clinch their first home series win of the season behind right-handed pitcher John Brownell in tonight’s game. Brownell is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his five starts this season. In his last outing on May 11 at New Britain, Brownell allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings and got a no decision in a 4-3 Bees triumph. Brownell has previously squared off against the Revolution on May 1, lasting just three innings and allowing three runs in his shortest start of the year.
York answers with right-handed pitcher Victor Mateo, who toes the rubber for the fifth time this season. Mateo has been a hard-luck starter for the Revs this season, going 0-2 despite a terrific 1.30 ERA. The former Rays and Braves prospect has not faced the Ducks this season yet. Mateo has the distinction of throwing two no-hitters in the minors with the Rays, one in 2011 with the Bowling Green Hot Rods (A-, TB) and a second in 2013 with the Montgomery Biscuits (AA, TB).
