Game 25: Ducks vs. Revolution

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 pm at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (10-14) return home to begin a three-game series with the York Revolution (9-14). The Ducks and Revs are squaring off for the eighth time this season, with Long Island sporting a handsome 5-2 record in the first seven contests. After this current three-game set, the Revolution won’t square off against the Ducks until July 31.

SUNDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks split a doubleheader with the New Britain Bees Sunday afternoon, winning 3-1 in the opener and falling 2-1 in the second game.

The opener remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, when the Ducks got on the scoreboard and took a 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Fehlandt Lentini grounded out to first base to plate Alex Burg. In the bottom of the fifth, Steve Carrillo brought home Jon Griffin with an RBI single to tie the game at one.

Long Island wasted no time in retaliating, stringing three straight hits together against Brandon Fry to take the lead back. Marc Krauss’ single scored Elmer Reyes to give the Ducks the advantage, and Krauss scored later in the frame when Dan Lyons was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded by Nate Roe.

Rafael Perez (2-1) allowed one run in five innings, striking out five and walking two to earn the win for the Ducks. New Britain starter Mike Lee did not factor in the decision after five shutout frames. Fry was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs without recording an out. Zac Treece and David Aardsma closed out the win, with Aardsma earning his fourth save of the season.

The nightcap was a pitcher’s duel as well, with the Bees breaking a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Baca led off the frame with a solo home run, and a Jovan Rosa single plated James Skelton to give New Britain a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Reyes drove home Lentini with a groundout to the pitcher Brandon League to cut the advantage to 2-1, but Joe Beimel came in with two outs to stop the bleeding. The Ducks mustered a hit from Lyons in the top of the seventh, his second of the game, but could not score.

Bees starter Brian Dupra (3-0) got the win by tossing five shutout innings, while Dennis O’Grady (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs in four innings plus four batters in the fifth. O’Grady struck out a season-high six batters in the effort.

ON THE MOUND: The Ducks open the new series with the Revolution by sending Tim Melville to the mound, making his fifth start of the season. Melville is 0-2 with a 3.98 ERA this season, and will be making his second straight start against York. Last time out on May 10, Melville allowed three runs in 5.1 innings, walking three and striking out two, getting no decision. The righty has walked three batters in each of his last two outings.

York counters with righty Steve Janas, who will be making his third start of the season against the Ducks, and his fifth overall. Last time against Long Island on May 9, Janas allowed just two runs (one earned) in six innings, getting no decision in a 4-3 extra-inning win for York. However, at York on May 3, the Ducks smacked Janas for eight runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings, as the right-hander got the loss in an 8-5 Long Island triumph.
