Game 23 & 24: Ducks at Bees
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:35 p.m. at New Britain Stadium (New Britain, Conn.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (9-13) look to get back in gear today as they square off against the New Britain Bees (7-14). The Bees have won the first two games of this four-game series, and have won four in a row against the Ducks. After yesterday’s scheduled game was postponed due to inclement weather, the Ducks and Bees will play a doubleheader this afternoon.
FRIDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks could only manage four hits against the New Britain Bees as the team fell 6-0 Friday night at New Britain Stadium.
Matt Larkins and Kyle Simon matched zeroes through the first three innings, but New Britain was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to an RBI single from Jon Griffin and a sacrifice fly from Jamar Walton.
The Ducks’ right-hander allowed just two runs in five innings, surrendering six hits, two walks and recording four strikeouts. Simon was a touch better, throwing five shutout frames in his first start of the year.
The Bees broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth against Tyler Wilson and Jim Fuller, each of whom were charged with two runs. Fuller allowed the big hit – a two-run triple for Michael Crouse – as the Bees swarmed to a 6-0 advantage.
The Ducks were unable to crack a hit after a two-out single in the sixth inning from Angelo Songco, and the lone offensive bright spot was Giovanny Alfonzo, who went 2-for-4. Dan Lyons snapped a streak of four games in a row without reaching base by drawing a pair of walks.
Rob Rogers and Tyler Levine each threw scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, respectively. In the ninth, Mike Hepple walked two batters, but evaded trouble to close out the win for the Bees. In the game, the Ducks never advanced a runner past second base.
ON THE MOUND: Long Island sends lefty Rafael Perez to the mound in the opener, making his fifth start of the season. The southpaw is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA, and is coming off a loss in his last start on May 8. Perez allowed three runs in seven innings in that outing at home against the York Revolution, and struck out a season-high seven while not issuing a walk. The former major leaguer has not faced the Bees yet this season.
New Britain will counter with Mike Lee. The 6-7 righty will be making his third appearance of the season and second start. He is 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in 2017, and allowed two runs in 3.1 innings in his last start on May 8 at Sugar Land. Lee split last year between New Britain and Lancaster in the Atlantic League, and went 2-0 in five combined outings against Long Island.
In game two Dennis O’Grady gets the call for Long Island, making his third start of the season and sixth overall appearance. O’Grady is 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA this season, and has made one prior appearance against New Britain, tossing two scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen on April 29. In the righty’s last start against York on May 9, he got a no decision while allowing three runs in six innings of work.
New Britain calls upon Brian Dupra in the nightcap, who enters with a 2-0 record and a 2.18 ERA. Dupra is making his fifth start of the season, and second against Long Island. On April 29 at Bethpage Ballpark, the righty allowed two runs in five innings, and got the win. In his last start at Sugar Land on May 9, Dupra allowed two runs in five innings, but got a no decision.
