Game 17: Ducks vs. Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (8-8) look to salvage the final game of a three-game series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs today (8-8). This marks the seventh of 20 scheduled skirmishes between the Ducks and Blue Crabs this season. Southern Maryland holds a 4-2 advantage in the first six meetings between the teams.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs combined to hit six home runs in a slugfest Saturday night at Bethpage Ballpark, won by the Blue Crabs, 8-5. Ducks designated hitter Angelo Songco connected for a pair of round-trippers, the first multi-homer game of the season for a Long Island player.
Ducks starting pitcher John Brownell was shaky early on, allowing a run two batters into the game when Danny Muno doubled to score Gary Brown from first and the Blue Crabs took a 1-0 lead.
Long Island returned the favor to Southern Maryland starter Gaby Hernandez, jumping out to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first after Songco hit an opposite-field home run with Delta Cleary Jr. on board.
Brownell settled down after the tumultuous start, allowing just one more run in his six innings of work, walking two and striking out a season-high seven. The right-hander got a no decision, but did register his second quality start of the season in four outings.
The Ducks added a run in the top of the third, when Cleary doubled with two outs and scored on a Songco single.
The score held at 3-2 Long Island until the top of the eighth, when Eric Gagne, pitching for the second straight night, served up a two-run home run to Michael Snyder. The Blue Crabs tacked on three more unearned runs in the inning after a Nolan Reimold error and took an 7-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Songco and Marc Krauss launched back-to-back solo home runs off Southern Maryland reliever Cody Hebner to close the gap to 7-5. A solo shot from Snyder off Jim Fuller in the top of the ninth padded the Blue Crabs lead to 8-5, and the Ducks went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame against Cody Eppley.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks turn to Matt Larkins this afternoon to put an end to the losing streak and end the series on a high note. Larkins will be making his fourth appearance of the season and his third start overall. The righty owns a 0-0 record and a sterling 2.70 ERA. He has struck out seven and walked three, while allowing 11 hits in 10 innings of work this year. In his last start on Sunday, April 30, the Idaho native tossed five shutout innings against the New Britain Bees. Larkins made a relief appearance in game two of Wednesday’s doubleheader at York, allowing three runs in an inning.
Southern Maryland rolls with the former major leaguer Justin De Fratus, who has been the ace of their staff in the early going as they look for a three-game sweep. De Fratus, who spent parts of five years in the bigs, has a 2-1 record with an impressive 1.30 ERA this season. In his last start on May 2 against Sugar Land, the righty went 8.2 innings, allowing just two unearned runs and striking out 11. The 6-4 De Fratus is tied for the league lead in wins, leads the league in strikeouts (21) and rates third in the circuit in ERA (1.30). He faced the Ducks on Opening Day, and allowed two unearned runs in six innings, though he was pegged with the loss and surrendered nine hits.
