Game 10: Ducks vs. Bees
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Ducks (4-5) look to take the rubber game of their three-game series against the New Britain Bees (3-5) this afternoon.
YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Long Island Ducks fought hard, but they fell to the New Britain Bees 3-2 on Saturday night at Bethpage Ballpark.
Long Island jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Cody Puckett reached on a one-out infield single, and Angelo Songco followed by launching his first home run of the season into the jet stream in right field.
Tim Melville got off to a strong start for the Ducks, retiring the first nine batters he faced, striking out three, but he hit a wall in the fourth. James Skelton led off the frame by reaching on an error, and before things were done, three runs came home for the Bees, who claimed a 3-2 advantage.
Bees starter Brian Dupra (2-0) settled down after the home run, yielding just two more hits in the remainder of his four innings. Melville (0-1) worked around a leadoff hit in the fifth to end his night.
Dennis O’Grady contributed two perfect innings out of the bullpen, recording three strikeouts, while Tyler Wilson and Jim Fuller kept the Bees at bay in the eighth, despite back-to-back walks by Wilson to start the stanza.
In the top of the seventh, Puckett doubled but couldn’t advance past second. Long Island was unable to pull even in the final two innings. Rob Rogers worked a scoreless ninth for the Ducks.
Puckett led the team with three hits and a run scored, and Songco had a 2-for-4 day with the home run, two RBIs and a run scored.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks send Matt Larkins to the mound to make his second start of the season and first of the year at the friendly confines of Bethpage Ballpark. In his first outing of the season, he allowed just one unearned run to the Somerset Patriots and took a no decision as Long Island fell 2-1 in 11 innings during game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader. The righty surrendered three hits to the Patriots in his four innings of work, striking out one and walking one. This will be his first-ever outing against New Britain.
Meanwhile, the Bees will send southpaw Anthony Marzi to the bump, making his second start of the season. In his 2017 debut with the Bees, he took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in three innings to Lancaster on Wednesday night. The southpaw, now in his second season with New Britain, walked two and did not record a strikeout in the loss. Marzi, who was team captain at the University of Connecticut in 2014 before being signed by the New York Yankees in 2015, was 5-1 with a 3.02 ERA in 36 games (four starts) for the Bees during the 2016 season.
