Spring Training Game 4: Ducks vs. Black Sox

Dan Lyons and the Ducks look to head into the 2017 season on a high note in their final spring training game this afternoon

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 12:00 pm at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TODAY’S MATCHUP: For the second straight day, the Long Island Ducks host the Long Island Black Sox in a spring training matchup. This is the final pre-season tune-up for the Ducks, who will start the 2017 season at Southern Maryland on Thursday evening.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks looked sharp yesterday in a 14-0 win over the Long Island Black Sox yesterday afternoon. Angelo Songco starred, smacking a pair of home runs and collecting 4 RBIs. Marc Krauss, getting the start in left field, went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored, and Fehlandt Lentini went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.

Keith Couch got his first start of the spring and looked good, generating outs on the ground with his sinker in three scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and one run while striking out two. David Aardsma, Chin-Hui Tsao, and Jim Fuller all pitched incredibly well out of the bullpen, while Dennis O’Grady, Zac Treece, and Amalio Diaz helped complete the shutout. Ducks pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts, including three apiece for Tsao and Fuller.

All 12 players who got an at bat for the Ducks had a hit in yesterday’s game.

ON THE MOUND: In today’s spring training finale, former major leaguer Tim Melville gets the start for the Ducks. The righty pitched last year for the Cincinnati Reds and the Triple-A Louisville Bats. Originally a fourth-round pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2008, Melville has also pitched in the Detroit Tigers minor league system. Before the 2010 season, he was ranked by Baseball Prospectus as the #93 prospect in all of baseball.

The Missouri native is scheduled to toss two to three innings, after which Patrick Crider, Tyler Wilson, Rob Rogers, and Tyler Levine will throw.
