Spring Training Game 3: Ducks vs. Black Sox
Marc Krauss and the Ducks swing back into action against the Long Island Black Sox Monday afternoon.
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 12:00 pm at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks continue their spring training schedule this afternoon by hosting the Long Island Black Sox. With Opening Day approaching on Thursday, the Ducks will use this game to help get position players and pitchers sharp to get off to a fast start in 2017. This is the first of two scheduled exhibitions with the Black Sox, with the club returning to Bethpage Ballpark Tuesday at 12 pm.
SATURDAY’S RESULT: Ducks pitching surrendered 11 hits but only allowed one run to the Bridgeport Bluefish in an exhibition game on Saturday at Bethpage Ballpark, with the game ending in a 1-1 tie after nine innings. Dan Lyons’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth plated Nolan Reimold for the lone Long Island tally of the afternoon, and Elmer Reyes continued his hot spring training by going 2-for-2 and making some nice plays at second base. Alex Burg and Marc Krauss added doubles to the Ducks’ eight-hit day.
On the mound, John Brownell put together a strong outing, tossing two shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Rafael Perez allowed a run on five hits in two innings of work, and Tim Melville, Patrick Crider, Rob Rogers, Tyler Levine and Tyler Wilson combined to shut out the Bluefish over the final five innings of the contest.
ON THE MOUND: Keith Couch gets the nod this afternoon for the Ducks, making his team debut. Couch comes to the Ducks after spending the first seven years of his career with the Boston Red Sox organization. The right-hander from Mineola, New York split the 2016 season between Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland. Overall, he posted a 10-8 record and a 3.96 ERA, tossing three complete games and showing good control in recording 73 strikeouts and just 37 walks in 127.1 innings.
The plan is for Couch to throw the first three to four innings of today’s game, after which he will be relieved by David Aardsma, Chin-Hui Tsao, Jim Fuller, Zac Treece, Dennis O’Grady and Amalio Diaz.
