LDCS Game Five: Ducks vs. Patriots

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 5:05 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: For the third time in the past four seasons, the Long Island Ducks and Somerset Patriots meet in a decisive fifth game, battling this evening for the 2016 Liberty Division Championship. In their previous two playoff game 5 meetings, Long Island took 2013’s game five (Atlantic League Championship Series), and Somerset won game five in 2015 (Liberty Division Championship Series) at TD Bank Ballpark in New Jersey. Long Island has a 2-1 all-time home record in game fives. After being outscored 13-2 in the first two games on the road, the Ducks have outscored the Patriots 9-1 at home. Long Island posted a 41-29 regular season record at Bethpage Ballpark.

GAME FOUR RESULT: Jarret Leverett and Anthony Vega lifted Long Island to a 2-0 win over Somerset in Game Four of the 2016 Liberty Division Championship Series.

Leverett fired seven shutout innings of six-hit ball, recording five strikeouts and a walk in the victory. Vega provided the lone spark, cranking a two-run home run off Somerset starter Shaun Garceau in the third inning to give the Ducks their 2-0 lead. Amalio Diaz tossed a scoreless eighth and Todd Coffey fired a scoreless ninth inning, earning the save.

Garceau took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out four over six and two-thirds innings.

Tyler Colvin doubled and scored to lead Long Island.

PITCHING MATCHUP: John Brownell, who pitched in game one, looks to beat Somerset for the second time this season. In Wednesday’s game, a 3-2 extra-innings loss to Somerset, Brownell did not factor in the decision. The right-hander lasted six innings, surrendering two runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Brownell has a 4-2 career postseason record for the Flock, striking out 33 in 54 and two-thirds innings.

Will Oliver, the Somerset starter who countered John Brownell in game one, takes the baseball for the Patriots. On Wednesday, Oliver fired seven strong innings, striking out three and walking two while allowing two runs on eight hits. The Newport Beach, California native is 2-0 over three career postseason games, posting an earned run average of 1.57. In three total appearances against the Ducks this season, Oliver has one win and has allowed eight earned runs over 20 innings of work (3.60 ERA).

UPDATE (6:11): END 4: Long Island still leads Somerset 5-0 in Game Five of the Liberty Division Championship Series. Brownell has retired 12 in a row.
