LDCS Game Three: Ducks vs. Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks looks to stave off elimination trailing two games to none to the Somerset Patriots in Game 3 of the Liberty Division Championship Series. Long Island last trailed 2-0 in a playoff series in 2009 against Southern Maryland, forcing a decisive fifth game. However, the Ducks did not complete the comeback. Against Somerset at Bethpage Ballpark this season, Long Island has won six out of ten. In all-time postseason play between the Ducks and the Patriots, the Flock has won three out of four games at the Duck Pond.
GAME TWO RESULT: The Somerset Patriots used 15 hits and two big innings to top the Ducks 10-0 in Game 2 of the Liberty Division Championship Series, taking a two games to none lead in the best-of-five showdown.
Somerset plated five runs in the bottom of the second, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth. Eric Farris led the way with three hits and two runs batted in. Vinny Zarrillo tallied a pair of hits, three RBIs, and two runs, while Aharon Eggleston and Bryan LaHair combined for four hits and four RBIs.
Fehlandt Lentini added two hits, including his second double of the series. Dan Lyons and Lew Ford also tallied a pair of hits. Relievers Danny Burawa and James Lomangino combined to throw three scoreless innings.
Patriots starter Nik Turley earned the win, striking out 14 batters over seven shutout innings. Long Island start Matt Larkins suffered the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Nick Struck enters Friday’s elimination game having won his past two starts. The right-hander picked up back-to-back wins over the York Revolution, striking out eight in each meeting. Over 11 and two-thirds innings, Struck allowed 11 hits and four walks but just four runs. Tonight marks the Oregon native’s second start against Somerset. On August 9 at Bethpage Ballpark, he tossed five solid innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Despite not getting the decision, the Ducks won 6-5.
Alexis Candelario takes the baseball for Somerset for the first time against Long Island all season. Candelario made just seven starts and eight appearances, posting wins against New Britain and Southern Maryland. His last outing, a relief appearance on September 18 against the Bees, resulted in three strikeouts and two hits allowed over one and one-third innings. His most recent start came on September 13 at Bridgeport. Though he did not factor in the decision, the Florida resident fanned five, allowing six hits and one earned run over four and two-thirds innings.
