Games 128-129: Ducks vs. Bluefish

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6 p.m. single admission doubleheader at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)

TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (25-32, 65-62) and the Bridgeport Bluefish (29-28; 59-68) battle in games two and three of a four-game series. The night will consist of two seven-inning games. Long Island owns the all-time series by one game over Bridgeport, posting a 165-164 record. However, this season the Flock has taken 11 of the 17 games between the two teams. Dan Lyons has been a stud against the ‘Fish, hitting .348, while Lew Ford has crushed three home runs.

MONDAY’S RESULT: Bridgeport’s Ross Seaton tossed a complete game, allowing one run on three hits in a 3-1 Bluefish victory over the Ducks.

Seaton’s only mistake came in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Delta Cleary Jr. doubled to left field, Cody Puckett slammed a single up the middle to bring in a run.

Bridgeport scored in the top of the second on a fielding error with the bases loaded. Bluefish runners Sean Burroughs and Jose Gil scored when a groundball squeaked under Tyler Colvin’s glove at first base. They increased their lead to three in the sixth on Gil’s RBI single.

Ducks starter Nick Struck suffered the hard-luck loss after allowing one earned run on eight hits and two walks. In five and two-thirds innings, Struck fanned two batters.

Cleary Jr. added another hit to lead the Flock with a pair on the day.

ON THE MOUND GAME ONE: Fresh off his longest outing of the season, Bobby Blevins looks to continue his positive stretch on Wednesday. Blevins took the tough-luck loss on Friday night in New Britain. In a 3-1 Ducks loss, the veteran pitched a complete game, surrendering three early runs and six hits with three strikeouts. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters, but was not granted enough offense for a win. The 31-year-old has had two starts against Bridgeport, tossing one dominant game and losing another. On July 20 at Bethpage Ballpark, Blevins shined, firing six innings of five-hit ball, while yielding two unearned runs with four strikeouts and a walk.

Long Island native David Kubiak takes the baseball against the Flock, a team that has handed him two losses so far. The Riverhead product has allowed seven runs in 10 and two-thirds innings with 12 strikeouts against the Ducks. His most recent outing, on September 2 against Southern Maryland, resulted in a no decision, but the Bluefish did win the ballgame. Kubiak struck out six and walked one, allowing five runs on seven hits over six innings. The 6-foot-7 right-hander was selected by Tampa Bay in the 36th round of the 2011 draft out of SUNY Albany.

ON THE MOUND GAME TWO: Jarret Leverett makes his second start for Long Island and 12th of the season. The right-hander, acquired in a trade with the New Britain Bees, took the loss in his Flock debut on Wednesday in Lancaster. Over five innings, the Georgia native allowed six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Leverett faced the Bluefish in his final start with the Bees. The 26-year-old earned the win, lasting six and one-third innings with three strikeouts and a walk. He yielded four runs on seven hits in a 5-4 New Britain win.

Matthew Spann, signed in late August by Bridgeport, makes his third start. The southpaw began the year with Advanced-A Potomac in the Washington Nationals system. The 25-year-old did not get a decision, despite allowing eight hits and eight walks over four and two-thirds innings. He struck out four and surrendered six hits in an 8-7 loss to York. He beat Lancaster on August 27, yielding one earned run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six innings. The Tampa Bay Rays selected Spann in the 25th round of the 2010 draft.
