Game 124: Ducks at Bees

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at New Britain Stadium (New Britain, CT)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (24-29, 64-59) continue their road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the New Britain Bees (26-28, 62-62). Long Island comes to Connecticut after dropping three of five against Lancaster, while the Bees return home from Texas as one of the hottest teams in the league. New Britain has won six straight games and currently sits in third place in the Liberty Division, trailing first-place Somerset by three games. The Ducks are four-and-a-half games back in the division, but have already clinched a spot in the postseason.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Luis Gonzalez silenced Ducks bats over eight innings as Lancaster topped Long Island 9-2 in the finale of a five-game series from Clipper Magazine Stadium.’

Gonzalez allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts and three walks for the victory. The Barnstormers were led offensively by K.C. Hobson who was 2-for-5 with an RBI double and a two-run home run. Trayvon Robinson, Kevin Ahrens, Mike Jacobs, and Dean Wilson each had two hits apiece. Josh Bell hit a solo home run for Lancaster.

Long Island plated a run on Carlos Hughes’ run-scoring groundout in the top of the fifth and Lew Ford’s RBI double in the ninth.

Jarret Leverett suffered the loss in his Ducks debut, yielding six runs on nine hits over five innings with three strikeouts and two walks.

Matt Wessinger doubled for Long Island and scored a run. Delta Cleary Jr. also scored a run for the Flock.

ON THE MOUND: Bobby Blevins returns to the mound for his 20th start of the season. Blevins dropped his past decision, losing a 5-2 contest to the York Revolution. Over six innings, the right-hander surrendered four runs on six hits, striking out six and walking two. Blevins has lost his past two starts versus the Bees. On August 16 the New York native allowed nine runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and two walks in six innings. His most recent win came on August 23 against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Blevins held Southern Maryland to one run on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks over six innings.

Kyle Simon returns to the mound for the Bees, making his first start since August 12. Simon has a 2.95 earned run average, but has not pitched enough innings to qualify for the top spot in the Atlantic League. Against the Skeeters on the 12th, the Long Beach, California product did not allow an earned run over seven innings, striking out four. Simon’s most recent head-to-head with the Ducks came on July 27 at Bethpage Ballpark. The Flock handed Simon a loss in a 9-2 Long Island victory. The righty allowed six runs on nine hits over four and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
