Game 122: Ducks at Barnstormers
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium (Lancaster, PA)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (24-27, 64-57) battle the Lancaster Barnstormers (21-30, 56-65) in the fourth game of a five-game series. The teams have split the 18 matchups this season, with the Ducks taking four of the past seven and two of three in the series. Long Island has hit very well against the Barnstormers, posting a .271 batting average. However, the pitching staff has struggled, allowing an earned run average of 5.22.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Long Island won game one 5-2 and dropped game two 4-2, splitting a single admission doubleheader with the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday night.
Daniel Herrera was terrific for the Ducks, allowing two runs in six innings to earn the victory. Long Island’s offense supported its left-handed knuckleballer with runs in the second, third, and sixth. Mike Dowd’s sacrifice fly and RBI in the second made it 1-0 Ducks. In the third, Delta Cleary Jr.’s sac fly and Lew Ford’s infield single did the damage.
Herrera allowed a solo home run to K.C. Hobson in the fourth, but Dowd drove in two more runs for Long Island in the sixth. Mike Jacobs drove in a late run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single, but Todd Coffey earned the save in the seventh for the victory.
Connor Root suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks over five and one-third innings. Coffey’s save in the final inning was his 24th.
Freddie Cabrera allowed a two run home run in the first inning of game two to Hobson. Carlos Hughes’ sac fly in the third cut the deficit to one run. Dan Lyons’ run-scoring fielder’s choice in the sixth tied the game at two.
Kyle Hansen surrendered two runs in the sixth. Kevin Ahrens and Caleb Gindl each collected crucial RBI singles to take a 4-2 lead. Cody Burns shut down the Ducks in the seventh, inducing three ground outs, for his 23rd save.
Pete Andrelczyk earned the victory, allowing one run on two hits in one inning, while Hansen took the loss. Neither starter factored in the decision. Cabrera lasted three innings, yielding two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Hitoshi Fujie allowed one run on one hit, fanning three and walking one in three frames.
ON THE MOUND: Nick Struck takes the hill for the Ducks following his most effective start of the season. Struck tossed seven scoreless innings against the Freedom Division’s First Half Champs, the York Revolution. The righty from Oregon struck out four, walked three, and allowed three hits to earn his first win as a starter. Struck dropped a decision against Lancaster on August 14 at Bethpage Ballpark. In a 12-0 Ducks loss, Struck lasted five and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked two batters.
Justin Jackson, a two-way player for Lancaster, makes his fourth start and 26th appearance of the year. His past outing, a strong six innings en route to a 6-3 win over Bridgeport, represented his first victory since May 22. Jackson struck out two and walked two, allowing two runs on five hits. He’s faced the Ducks three times, all in relief appearances. Over two and one-third innings, Jackson has been perfect, striking out one. Offensively, Jackson has played in 22 games, hitting .250 with one home run. The North Carolina native is a former first round draft selection by Toronto in 2007.
