Game 119: Ducks at Barnstormers
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium (Lancaster, PA)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (22-26, 62-56) travel to Pennsylvania for a five-game in four-day series against the Lancaster Barnstormers (20-28, 55-63). The Barnstormers currently sit in last place in the Freedom Division, 10 games back of first-place Sugar Land. Lancaster has lost six of its last 10, but currently owns an 8-7 record against Long Island. The Ducks, against the Barnstormers, have been led offensively by Delta Cleary Jr. and Fehlandt Lentini. Cleary Jr. has posted a team-leading .382 batting average in 11 games, while Lentini has clobbered two home runs and driven in 12 runs.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: York’s early home runs provided enough cushion to escape Long Island 5-2 in the series finale Sunday.
Jared Mitchell’s two-run home run and Kevin Rivers’ solo blast against Ducks starter Bobby Blevins gave the Revolution a 3-0 lead in the first inning. In the second, Michael Burgess’ solo home run to left field made it 4-0.
Long Island closed the gap to three on Tyler Colvin’s sacrifice fly in the sixth, but York would extend the lead to four in the seventh. Travis Witherspoon scored from third base on a double play ball. Mike Blanke walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, bringing in the Ducks’ second and final run of the game.
Frank Gailey, who struck out eight over five and two-thirds innings, earned the victory. He allowed just one run on four hits and three walks. Blevins dropped to 2-9 with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. The righty struck out six and walked two. Mike DeMark struck out one in a scoreless ninth, earning his 31st save.
Delta Cleary Jr. led Long Island with a pair of hits, while Fehlandt Lentini scored two runs.
ON THE MOUND: John Brownell looks to return to the dominant pitcher he was in July. The right-hander’s month of August has left him 0-3 with a 4.58 earned run average, which is much different than his prior month. In July, the veteran righty went 4-0 with a 2.45 ERA. Brownell’s most recent meeting with Lancaster, on August 12 at home, did not result in a decision. He allowed 10 hits and seven runs in six innings, striking out a season-low two and walking three. The Nebraska native’s past win came on July 27 against New Britain. He struck out seven over seven innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk.
Joey Maher faces the Ducks for the second time this season. Maher tossed five and two-thirds innings of nine-hit ball on August 12 at Bethpage Ballpark. He did not get a decision, striking out five, walking four, and allowing four runs in a 10-7 Lancaster loss. His past outing, an August 24th start against Somerset, was his most effective and efficient. Maher allowed one run on five hits. In seven terrific innings, he struck out one and walked one, leading the Barnstormers to a 4-1 victory. The former New York Yankees draft selection made 19 appearances with Advanced-A Tampa earlier this season.
