GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MAT CHUP: The Long Island Ducks (21-23, 61-53) and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (20-25, 46-69) battle in the rubber game of a three-game series. It’s also the final game of the 20 total matchups between the two teams. Long Island has won 13 of the 19 previous games, but has dropped three of the past four. Against the Blue Crabs, the Ducks’ offense has flourished. Long Island has a team batting average of .308, has crushed 19 home runs, and has driven in 103 RBIs.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Angel Sanchez’s five runs batted in lifted the Blue Crabs to a 6-4 win over the Ducks in the middle game of a three-game set.

Sanchez struck early for Southern Maryland, driving in a run in the first inning. The Ducks took a 2-1 lead in the home half of the inning on Ruben Gotay’s RBI double and Mike Dowd’s run-scoring single. In the third, Sanchez cracked a two-out, two-run double off Ducks starter John Brownell. Ruben Gotay evened the score at three with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.

Southern Maryland took a 5-3 lead two innings later on Sanchez’s two-run home run to left field. The Blue Crabs extended the lead to three when Michael Snyder walked with the bases loaded. Matt Wessinger’s home run in the bottom of the eighth trimmed the deficit to two, but Long Island could not pull any closer.

Brian Burres, who tossed five innings of six-hit ball, earned the victory. Burres struck out five and walked one, allowing three runs. Brownell fell to 8-6, allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits in six and one-third innings with four strikeouts. Cody Eppley, despite yielding a run on two hits in the seventh, collected his 24th save.

Gotay and Lew Ford each tallied two hits, while Delta Cleary Jr. and Fehlandt Lentini each stole one base.

ON THE MOUND: Texas native Daniel Herrera makes his second start for the Ducks, having returned to Long Island for his second season. The left-hander lost his past outing, a three and two-third inning start against Sugar Land, on August 19. He allowed six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Herrera, who spent 2015 with Camden and 2014 with Somerset, made his MLB debut in 2008 with Cincinnati. The Brooklyn resident was drafted in the 45th round of the 2006 draft out of the University of New Mexico.

Gaby Hernandez takes the bump against Long Island for the third time. In his first two starts, Hernandez pitched extremely well. Over a combined 12 innings, the right-hander allowed two earned runs on eight hits with 16 strikeouts and two walks. However, his past meeting with the Ducks, on July 22 in Southern Maryland, Hernandez allowed a season-high 11 runs on 12 hits in just three and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts and two walks. In his 13th professional season, Hernandez was drafted by the Mets in the third round of the 2004 MLB draft.
