Game 114: Ducks vs. Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:00 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (20-22, 60-52) and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (19-24, 45-68) will play the remainder of Tuesday’s suspended game and Wednesday’s regularly scheduled game. The second game will last seven innings. The Ducks have owned the series this season against the Blue Crabs, outscoring Southern Maryland 104-54. Long Island boasts a 12-5 record against its Freedom Division counterpart, winning six of seven at home. Dan Lyons has hit a whopping .385 with three home runs and seven RBI in 14 games against Southern Maryland, while Fehlandt Lentini has driven in 17 runs in 17 games this season.
SUNDAY’S RESULT: Long Island dropped the final game of a four-game series to the Sugar Land Skeeters 11-1.
Ruben Gotay’s two-out run-scoring single gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, Sugar Land tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Wilfredo Rodriguez’s fielder’s choice.
The Skeeters scored ten unanswered runs on 15 total hits. Leadoff hitter Josh Prince was 2-for-5 with four RBIs, including a two-run home run. Both Johan Limonta and Albert Cordero went 3-for-4, combing for five runs batted in.
Ducks starter Mike Jackson Jr. suffered his first loss of the year, allowing nine runs on 12 hits in five and one-third innings. He fanned five and walked one. Sugar Land’s Michael Nix surrendered one runs on five hits and a walk, striking out six over six innings in the victory.
Cody Puckett collected a pair of hits to lead the Flock.
ON THE MOUND: John Brownell looks to bounce back from two outings in which he allowed 24 combined hits. In his past start, on August 17 against New Britain, Brownell allowed three runs on 14 hits, striking out eight and walking one in eight innings. Despite the low allowance of runs, Brownell took the loss in a 3-1 contest. Prior to that start against New Britain, Brownell surrendered seven runs on 10 hits in six innings but did not receive a decision. In three meetings with Southern Maryland, Brownell is 2-1.
Brian Burres, who started in the All-Star Game for the Freedom Division, takes the baseball against the Ducks for the third time this season. His earned run average of 2.92 ranks best in the Atlantic League despite losing his past four starts. Burres’ past outing, on August 18 against Bridgeport, resulted in three earned runs on eight hits in eight innings. The lefty struck out three and walked three in a 3-2 loss to the Bluefish. His most recent outing against the Ducks came on July 9 when the former big leaguer tossed six scoreless innings of two-hit ball, fanning seven and walking two in a 2-0 Blue Crabs victory.
