Game 103: Ducks vs. Barnstormers
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (18-14, 58-44) welcome in the Lancaster Barnstormers (14-19, 49-54) for a three-game series Friday through Sunday. The series is tied at six, with the Barnstormers winning three of the past five meetings. Lancaster failed to clinch a playoff spot in the Freedom Division’s first half race. The Barnstormers enter this series tied for third place with Southern Maryland, sitting six-and-a-half games out of first place. Against the Barnstormers this season at Bethpage Ballpark, the Ducks own a 5-2 mark.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Long Island dropped a 7-4 decision to Somerset in the finale of a four-game set, splitting the serieswith the Patriots.
Eric Farris’ RBI double and a run-scoring single by Brian LaHair gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Ducks quickly tied it up in the bottom of the frame on Delta Cleary Jr.’s RBI groundout and Cody Puckett’s run-scoring single.
Puckett and Ruben Gotay gave Long Island its first lead of the game in the third. An RBI fielder’s choice and an RBI single, respectively, gave the Ducks a 4-2 advantage. Somerset cut the deficit to one run on Scott Kelly’s sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Danny Burawa entered the game in the eighth, trying to hold a 4-3 lead for Long Island, but Somerset rallied for four runs to take a 7-4 lead. Farris drove in a run with a single, LaHair brought one in on a sac fly, and Kyle Roller’s two-run double did the damage.
Ducks starter Bobby Blevins did not factor in the decision, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in six innings. Somerset’s Will Oliver improved to 3-2 with a nine-strikeout performance. The right-hander yielded four runs on nine hits and two walks over seven innings. In the ninth inning for the second night in a row, former Duck Jon Hunton collected the save with a scoreless frame.
Tyler Colvin and Fehlandt Lentini had two hits apiece for Long Island.
ON THE MOUND: John Brownell searches for his ninth win of the season, taking the mound for the 19th time. Brownell’s past 12 starts have been quality outings, posting a 5-3 record and an ERA of 2.38. The Omaha, Nebraska native currently sits third in the Atlantic League with a 2.83 earned run average. The 33-year-old has struck out 12 in 12 innings against Lancaster this season, amassing two starts. On June 17, his most recent meeting with the Barnstormers, Brownell struck out seven over six innings.
Joey Maher makes his third start in a Barnstormers uniform. Maher heard his name called by the New York Yankees in the 38th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. The Bedford, New Hampshire product pitched for the Yankees’ rookie-level, Single-A, and Advanced-A before being released. He went 1-2 with a 4.37 ERA with the Tampa Yankees, making 19 appearances. In two starts with the Barnstormers, Maher has allowed five earned runs on 15 hits in just eight and two-thirds innings.
