Game 100: Ducks vs. Patriots

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (17-12, 57-42) and Somerset Patriots (15-16, 53-48) battle in game two of a four-game series. Long Island has won six out of the past seven against Somerset, including the past four at Bethpage Ballpark. Offensively, Delta Cleary Jr. and Fehlandt Lentini are hitting .318 and 313, respectively, against the Patriots in 17 head-to-head matchups.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Long Island beat Somerset 8-6 in a topsy-turvy series opener from Bethpage Ballpark.

Lentini and Cody Puckett each slammed solo home runs in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Ducks a 2-0 lead. Somerset scored in the top of the second on an RBI fielder’s choice from Luis Mateo, but the Ducks extended their lead to 3-1 on Mike Blanke’s run-scoring single.

Somerset mounted a rally in the third, taking a 5-3 lead. Yovan Gonzalez’s run-scoring double, Carlos Guzman’s two-run double, and Brian Van Kirk’s RBI base knock put the Patriots in front. Dan Lyons and the Ducks worked quickly to tie and take the lead in the bottom of the inning. Lyons smashed a two-run double, making it 5-5. Mike Dowd quickly drove Lyons in to make it 6-5 Long Island.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ruben Gotay’s bloop single to center field brought in two runs, giving the Ducks the insurance runs they needed. Somerset plated a run in the eighth, but Amalio Diaz and Todd Coffey closed the door.

Kyle Hansen earned the victory with a scoreless inning of relief, while starter D.J. Mitchell did not get a decision. Mitchell tossed three innings of six-hit ball, allowing five runs and five walks. Randy Boone was the losing pitcher, yielding six runs on seven hits and two walks over two and two-third innings. Coffey picked up his 20th save with a perfect ninth.

ON THE MOUND: Nick Struck makes a spot start for Long Island in place of Dustin Richardson. Tuesday marks Struck’s second start of the year for Long Island. The reliever made his first start on July 28 versus Sugar Land. The Oregon native did not receive a decision, tossing three innings of six-hit ball with three strike outs. He allowed two runs in an 8-6 Long Island loss.

Shaun Garceau makes his second consecutive start against Long Island. In a 4-2 Somerset loss on August 2, Garceau pitched well but did not receive a decision, striking out four over seven and two-third innings. The right-hander allowed one run and a walk on five hits. The former Duck had his best season in 2014 with Long Island, compiling a 13-4 record with 117 strikeouts in 166 innings. He’s also won two championships in the Atlantic League, winning with York in 2011 and with Long Island in 2013.
