Game 99: Ducks vs. Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (16-12, 56-42) return home following a six-game road trip to host the Somerset Patriots (15-15, 53-47). The Ducks and Patriots have split their 16 meetings this season; Long Island has won five of the past six battles. This four-game series marks the final head-to-head of the regular season. Somerset trails both Long Island and Bridgeport by two games in the Liberty Division for first place.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks dropped Sunday’s contest against the Bluefish 3-1, falling in two of three against Bridgeport.
Luis Nunez struck first for Bridgeport, giving the Bluefish a 1-0 lead in the fifth on an RBI double. The lead increased to 2-0 in the next inning on Jose Gil’s two-out run-scoring single.
Following a double in the eighth, Fehlandt Lentini scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Bridgeport scored again in the bottom of the inning. Sean Burroughs delivered an RBI double with two outs to balloon the lead to 3-1.
Former Yankee Jonathan Albaledejo earned the victory for Bridgeport, pitching seven innings of one-run ball. He allowed six hits and fanned nine. John Brownell took the loss, yielding three runs on eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts in eight innings. Jose Veras collected his ninth save with a scoreless ninth.
Lentini’s two hits led the way for Long Island.
ON THE MOUND: D.J. Mitchell makes his second start for the Ducks. For the third time in a row, the right-hander will face Somerset. Mitchell, newly donned in a Ducks jersey, turned in a victory on August 3, tossing five innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs with five strikeouts and four walks. Mitchell was traded from Bridgeport to Long Island on July 31 in exchange for Sean Burroughs. The former New York Yankee posted a 2-3 record and a 4.39 ERA for the Bluefish in 12 games and nine starts this season.
Randy Boone, who countered D.J. Mitchell in last Wednesday’s meeting, makes his fourth start of the year. Boone took the loss, his only decision of the season, allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings. Boone made 16 starts with last year’s Patriots, going 5-3 with a rock solid 2.80 earned run average. Boone missed the first few months of the season due to the birth of his child.
