Game 93: Ducks at Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, N.J.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (13-9; 53-39) begin a six-game road trip when they visit the Liberty Division rival Somerset Patriots (12-12; 50-44) to open a three-game series. Long Island enters the day tied with the Bridgeport Bluefish for first place in the second half standings. Somerset is currently two games behind the Ducks and Bluefish. Somerset leads the season series 7-6 and has a 5-2 advantage at TD Bank Ballpark, but the Ducks have won five of the last six meetings between the teams, including two of the last three in New Jersey.
SUNDAY’S RESULT: The Sugar Land Skeeters once again received a strong performance from their starting pitcher en route to a 4-1 win over the Ducks.
Aaron Thompson (6-3), who had been roughed up in a pair of losses earlier this season at Bethpage Ballpark, turned in a stellar effort. The southpaw gave up just three hits, all singles, in seven shutout innings against the Ducks. He walked a pair of hitters while striking out two as well and needed just 83 pitches to get through seven innings.
Meanwhile, Bobby Blevins (1-6) also pitched well for the Ducks and was victimized by one tough inning. All of Sugar Land’s runs came home in the fourth against the right-hander, as he allowed five hits, hit a batter and was victimized by a throwing error that allowed a run to score. Aside from the fourth, Blevins gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out five in his other six innings of work.
Once again, Long Island tried to mount a late rally. The Ducks collected two hits and a walk in the eighth against Andrew Johnston, including a two-out RBI single by Fehlandt. Lefty Dan Runzler was summoned though and retired Delta Cleary Jr. on a ground ball to strand two on base. The Ducks then loaded the bases in the ninth against Derrick Loop on two singles and a walk. However, Mike Dowd and Mike Blanke both flew out to end the game and strand three.
ON THE MOUND: In 2013, John Brownell and Shaun Garceau were the Ducks’ Game One and Game Two starters in the postseason on their way to the Atlantic League championship. Tonight, they’ll face each other in the series opener.
Brownell has had a marvelous season for the Ducks, keeping his name in the discussion for the pitching Triple Crown in 2016. He enters the day tied for second in the league in wins (8), is third in strikeouts (98) and ranks fifth in ERA (2.89). The right-hander has also won four of his past five starts, taking a no-decision in the other. His most recent outing came on Wednesday when he threw all seven innings in game one of a doubleheader against the Bees. Brownell gave up just two runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out seven in a 9-2 victory. The defending Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year has made two starts against the Patriots this season. He took a no-decision on Opening Night in New Jersey, giving up three runs in five innings of work. Then on July 15, he earned the win on Long Island with seven innings of three-run ball in a 6-3 Ducks victory.
Garceau has made 10 starts since joining the Patriots on May 27, compiling a 2-1 record with a 4.07 ERA and 29 strikeouts. He took a no-decision his last time out on July 27 at York, yielding two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. Somerset went on to lose the game 4-3. Prior to being signed by the Patriots, the right-hander appeared in six game (five starts) with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and posted a 1-2 record with a 5.19 ERA and 16 strikeouts. He faced the Ducks while with the Blue Crabs on May 14 and surrendered seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk in four innings while striking out two.
