Game 90: Ducks vs. Skeeters
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (12-7, 52-37) and Sugar Land Skeeters (13-9, 48-44) embark on game two of a four-game series. Long Island has won five out of the last six against Sugar Land. The Ducks hold a one-game lead over the Somerset Patriots in the Liberty Division, while the Skeeters lead the York Revolution by one game in the Freedom Division.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Despite a valiant comeback, the Ducks fell short of the Skeeters, 8-6, in game one of a four-game series.
Travis Scott’s RBI double in the second inning gave Sugar Land a 1-0 lead, but Mike Dowd’s two-run blast over the center field wall in the bottom of the inning put Long Island in front 2-1. In the fourth, Johan Limonta’s run-scoring single tied the game at two.
The Skeeters jolted out to a 6-2 lead with a four-run fifth. Delwyn Young’s RBI double and a Ducks error brought in two, while Ricky Hague’s run-scoring single and Jeremy Barfield’s sacrifice fly accounted for the other two.
The Ducks pulled one run closer in the fifth on Delta Cleary Jr.’s single that drove in Mike Blanke, but Sugar Land delivered a big blow in the seventh. Young cranked a two-run home run, giving the Skeeters an 8-3 lead. With one run in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings each, the Ducks mounted a comeback, but ultimately fell short. Cleary Jr.’s RBI single in the seventh made it 8-4, while sac flies from Fehlandt Lentini and Mark Mincozzi brought the Ducks within two.
Sugar Land starter Roy Merritt earned the victory, tossing five and one-third innings of eight-hit ball. The lefty allowed three runs and one walk while striking out seven. Kyle Hansen suffered the loss, giving up two runs on one hit and two walks in one inning of relief. Long Island starter Nick Struck did not factor in the decision, but yielded four runs on six hits and a walk in three innings.
Dowd and Cleary Jr. led Long Island with three hits and two runs batted in.
ON THE MOUND: Left-hander Dustin Richardson takes the hill for the third consecutive time. The Kansas native has been extremely effective. In nine innings, Richardson has allowed one unearned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. The former Red Sox reliever took the tough-luck loss his past outing, on July 24, giving up one unearned run in a 2-0 Ducks loss to the Blue Crabs. Richardson faces his former team, the Sugar Land Skeeters, tonight. He pitched for the Skeeters in 2012 and 2013, making three starts.
Jake Hale toes the rubber for the Skeeters for the first time against the Ducks this season. Hale joined the Skeeters in May and has made eight starts and 12 appearances. The former Ohio State Buckeye did not get the decision in his past start, on July 24 versus York, allowing four runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts. The 6-foot-7 right-hander pitched with Southern Maryland in 2015 and starter the All-Star game for the Freedom Division.
