GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (10-6, 50-36) wrap up their three-game series with a single admission doubleheader against the New Britain Bees (7-11, 43-45). Following Monday’s postponement due to inclement weather, the Ducks and Bees play two seven-inning contests with a 25-minute break in between. Long Island and New Britain have played 11 tightly-contested ballgames in 2016, with seven games being decided by three runs or less. Both teams have hit .273 in the head-to-head series, but the Ducks own the pitching margin, allowing 2.73 earned runs per game to New Britain’s 4.40.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks fell to the Bees 4-1 in the opener of a three-game series. New Britain collected 14 hits, while the Ducks offense only mustered one run on eight hits.

A run-scoring single by James McOwen and a sacrifice fly by Jake McGuiggan put the Bees in front 2-0 in the top of the second inning. New Britain capitalized on fielding errors in the fourth and sixth innings, allowing McOwen and Greg Golson to score, respectively.

The Ducks threatened in the ninth, scoring on Dan Lyons’ RBI single which drove in Delta Cleary Jr. from second base. However, Sean Gilblair closed out the game, silencing a Long Island comeback.

Shawn Haviland earned the victory with seven shutout innings, allowing six hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Ducks starter Bobby Blevins fell to 1-5, allowing four runs (two earned) on 11 hits and one walk. In six innings, the righty struck out four.

Cleary Jr. had three hits for Long Island, including a double.

ON THE MOUND (GAME ONE):  John Brownell looks to turn in his tenth straight quality start. The five-year Duck had crept higher and higher on the Atlantic League’s League Leaders board in ERA, dropping his number to a seventh-best 2.73. The 33-year-old out of Omaha, Neb. struck out six over seven and one-third innings against Bridgeport on July 21. Despite not getting the decision in an 8-4 Ducks win, Brownell allowed three runs on five hits and did not walk a batter. In his only start versus the Bees, on April 26, Brownell allowed one run on six hits over six innings. In a 2-1 Ducks loss, he did not receive a decision, striking out six and walking three.

Kyle Simon, who started for the Liberty Division in the 2016 Atlantic League All-Star game, faces Long Island for the second time. In his first outing against the Ducks, on April 25, Simon was incredibly efficient, allowing one hit and one walk in five scoreless innings. The right-hander did not receive a decision in New Britain’s 5-2 loss. The Long Beach, Ca. native has won three of his past four starts, topping Lancaster in his most recent outing with eight strong innings.

ON THE MOUND (GAME TWO): Kevin Vance makes a spot start for Long Island in place of Darin Downs, whose contract was purchased by the Uni-President Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League earlier today. On July 7 at Southern Maryland, Vance earned the start, his first professional start since 2012, and tossed three scoreless innings with two strikeouts and one walk. As a reliever with the Ducks this season, Vance has appeared in 21 games, compiling a 3-1 record with an ERA of 5.90.

Anthony Marzi makes his second consecutive start after appearing 19 times out of the bullpen. Marzi allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and six walks, striking out five in five innings on July 20 versus Lancaster. The left-hander did not receive a decision in that contest, despite a 10-5 loss to the Barnstormers. The Berlin, Conn. native graduated from the University of Connecticut and pitched in seven and one-third innings for the New York Yankees’ Gulf Coast League team last season.
