GAME TIME/LOCATION: 11:05 a.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TODAY’S MATCHUP: Following Monday’s rainout, the Long Island Ducks (10-5, 50-35) open up a seven-game homestand with the first of three games against the New Britain Bees (6-11, 42-45). The Ducks posted a 6-4 record versus the Bees in the first half, including four consecutive wins. New Britain enters Tuesday morning’s contest last in the Liberty Division, sitting five games behind first-place Long Island. The Bees are led offensively by All-Star Jovan Rosa, who is hitting .302 with eight home runs and 42 RBIs.

SUNDAY’S RESULT: The Long Island offense was quieted by Southern Maryland pitching, as the Ducks fell 2-0 in the series finale from Regency Furniture Stadium.

Southern Maryland scored its first run in the fourth on a throwing error by Ducks catcher Mike Dowd. His throw to third base, an attempt to cut down base-stealer D’Arby Myers, sailed into left field. Myers crossed the plate easily. In the seventh, Alfredo Marte blasted a solo home run over the Mini Monster in left field, giving the Blue Crabs a 2-0 lead, one they would not squander.

Brian Grening earned the victory, tossing six and two-third shutout innings. The righty allowed three runs and two walks, striking out five. Dustin Richardson, who yielded an unearned run on two hits in five innings, surrendered the loss. The lefty fanned three batters in his second start. Cody Eppley earned his 17th save with a perfect ninth.

The Ducks were held to just four hits. Anthony Vega doubled, while Delta Cleary Jr., Dan Lyons, and Ruben Gotay singled.

ON THE MOUND: Bobby Blevins takes the baseball for Long Island in search of his second win of the year. Since returning to the rotation on July 5, Blevins has posted two solid starts in a row. Despite his efforts, the Ducks have dropped both games the 31-year-old has pitched in. Against the Barnstormers on July 5, Blevins fired five innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs and a walk with one strikeout. The Briarcliff resident followed up with six strong innings against Bridgeport on July 20. In a 3-2 Ducks loss, Blevins allowed two unearned runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one. In his past four outings, Blevins has allowed two or less runs, however the Ducks have lost all four games by one run.

Shawn Haviland makes his third start against Long Island. Haviland was hit hard by the Ducks on May 29, allowing six runs on seven hits in a 12-3 Bees loss. In five and one-third innings, the righty walked four and struck out two. However, the 30-year-old bounced back nicely on June 16, giving up one run on seven hits in six and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts. The former Ivy-leaguer out of Harvard did not get a decision in his past start, tossing five innings of three-hit ball. He allowed one earned run, struck out seven, and walked four.
