Game 85: Ducks at Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 2:05 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium (Waldorf, Md.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (10-4, 50-34) wrap up their three-game series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (6-10, 32-53). The Ducks have posted a 12-4 record against the Blue Crabs, the best winning percentage against any opponent in the Atlantic League. In wins, the Ducks outscore the Crabs by 4.8 runs. In losses, the margin is very tight, with Southern Maryland outscoring Long Island by only 1.5 runs.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Gary Brown’s seventh inning home run broke a 1-1 tie, sending Southern Maryland over Long Island 2-1 in the middle game of a three-game series.
Mark Minicozzi tallied the first of his three hits in the second inning, when his RBI single put the Ducks in front 1-0. In the bottom of the frame, Cody Puckett’s throwing error opened the door for the Blue Crabs to tie the game at one. On the play, Long Island tried to turn an inning-ending double play, but Puckett’s errant throw faded away from second baseman Matt Wessinger and into right field.
Bruce Kern, who did not get a decision, allowed one unearned run over six innings. The righty struck out five, yielding six hits and two walks. Kevin Baez handed the ball off to lefty reliever Eury De La Rosa in the seventh inning.
Brown sent De La Rosa’s first pitch over the Mini Monster in left field, giving Southern Maryland it’s 2-1 lead.
Southern Maryland’s Daryl Thompson pitched well, but did not receive a decision. In six innings, the right-hander allowed one run on five hits, striking out six and walking three. Scott Maine earned the win, working a scoreless inning, while De La Rosa took the loss. Cody Epply notched his 16th save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth.
Minicozzi collected three hits to lead Long Island, while Cody Puckett tallied two hits and scored the Ducks’ lone run.
ON THE MOUND: Left-hander Dustin Richardson makes his second start in a Ducks uniform. After making nine relief appearances, Richardson tossed four scoreless innings of one-hit ball against Bridgeport, striking out four and walking one in his first start. The former Boston Red Sox pitcher has faced Southern Maryland twice, allowing three runs on six hits in two innings. Richardson started the 2016 in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization before coming to Central Islip.
California native Brian Grening takes the bump for Southern Maryland following his best outing of the season. On 19 against York, Grening hurled six and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball, striking out seven while allowing six hits and two walks. Grening lost his past three appearances prior to his win over York. His past start against Long Island, on July 8, resulted in a loss. In five innings, the righty surrendered four runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
